Tom Holland Done With Acting For Now, New Series Broke Him
Tom Holland is taking a break from acting for a year now that The Crowded Room is out.
Tom Holland, known best for portraying Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, plays Danny Sullivan in the forthcoming Apple TV+ series, The Crowded Room. At 27, he is an executive producer on the series as well, marking a significant achievement in his career. Despite the success, Holland revealed to Extra that the challenging project broke him, prompting him to undertake a year-long hiatus to recuperate.
“It was a tough time, for sure,” he told the outlet. In addition to navigating uncharted emotional territory, Tom Holland indicated that his responsibilities as a producer introduced an additional layer of stress. “I’m now taking a year off, and that is a result of how difficult this show was,” he added.
Tom Holland, who began his acting career in 2006, found himself immersed in a rigorous schedule when he took on the role of Spider-Man in the MCU. The role demands strenuous shoots and involves vast promotional activities and public appearances. Additionally, his participation in other challenging projects like The Crowded Room amplifies the workload, making it apparent how this level of intensity could negatively impact his mental health.
While The Crowded Room clearly took an emotional toll on Tom Holland, it also brought some positive outcomes. Last month, he shared his sobriety milestone of one year and four months with Entertainment Weekly, acknowledging that the process of filming the Apple TV+ series helped him recognize his personal triggers. Through the show, he expressed his aspiration for audiences to demonstrate increased empathy and respect for those grappling with mental health challenges.
In The Crowded Room, Danny Sullivan (Tom Holland) is arrested in the summer of 1979 due to his involvement in a shooting at Rockefeller Center. An unlikely investigator is tasked with unraveling the enigma behind the crime to prevent the actual perpetrator from repeating his actions. The show is based on the real crimes of Billy Milligan, who was diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder.
Along with Tom Holland, The Crowded Room stars Will Chase, Lior Raz, Amanda Seyfried, Thomas Sadoski, Sam Vartholomeos, Nuala Clearly, and Zachary Golinger. Akiva Goldsman (Star Trek: Picard) and Todd Graff (Joyful Noise) created the series, with Brad Corbet (Vox Lux) and Mona Fastvold (The Sleepwalker), each directing multiple episodes. The series kicks off on June 9, debuting the first three episodes, followed by the release of the remaining seven episodes each subsequent Friday.
Beyond The Crowded Room, Tom Holland is expected to reprise his role as Peter Parker in the hotly anticipated Spider-Man 4. According to IMDb, the film is in pre-production, and it remains uncertain if Holland’s year-long break will disrupt the timeline or development of the project. Details surrounding the film’s plot are being kept under wraps, and there is no confirmed release date at this time.
Further out, Tom Holland is also attached to play the lead in an upcoming and untitled Fred Astaire biopic. He is set to bring to life the legendary American singer, dancer, and actor, famed for his groundbreaking choreography and graceful dance moves in musical theatre. Paul King is directing the picture from a script by Lee Hall and Micah Schraft.
