Tom Hiddleston fans will be happy to discover that they won’t have to wait for the second season of Loki to see him again. A trailer for the actor’s latest project, an Apple TV+ series called The Essex Serpent, has arrived for your approval. Be warned, however: this isn’t a trippy adventure through the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is a moody take on Victorian horror, with an all-star cast, according to a report on ComicBook.com.
Based on the 2016 novel by British author Sarah Perry, the series follows Cora Seaborne (Claire Danes, Homeland and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines), a widow from London who comes with her son to the rural town of Aldwinter in Essex to verify reports of a terrifying serpent stalking residents from a nearby lake. The locals, including Pastor Will Ransome (Tom Hiddleston), are skeptical of the reports, but Cora is a believer, and determined to find the truth. When strange and evil things begin to happen around the town, the blame quickly shifts to Cora, who is accused of attracting the creature. The trailer also hints at a forbidden tryst between Sarah and Will, who is married.
Not only does the trailer tease a disturbing Gothic horror setting, it highlights the chemistry of Tom Hiddleston and Claire Danes, whose characters team up to hunt down the elusive serpent. A romance develops between the two, and things get even more complicated when the serpent’s reign of terror brings tragedy to the village. As a mob mentality takes over the town and focuses its fury on Cora, Hiddleston’s Will must decide whether to follow his heart and stand by her side. The cast also features Frank Dillane (Fear the Walking Dead), Clémence Poésy (Tenet, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2) as Will’s wife, and Hayley Squires (The Electrical Life of Louis Wain), which is directed by BAFTA Award-nominee Clio Barnard (Dark River, The Selfish Giant) and written by BAFTA Award-nominee Anna Symon (Mrs. Wilson, Deep Water). The six-episode limited series premieres on Apple TV+ on May 13th and runs through June 10.
The series is the latest high-profile TV production for Tom Hiddleston, who was announced as a member of the cast earlier this year. He gained worldwide notoriety playing Loki, the God of Mischief, in a number of Marvel’s superhero films. He reprised the role for the series Loki, which premiered on the Disney+ streaming service last year to much acclaim. He was nominated for two Primetime Emmys as actor and producer of the AMC limited series The Night Manager. His other recent credits include Kong: Skull Island and Crimson Peak, another Victorian horror story. Claire Danes is a three-time Emmy winner, winning twice for her role on Homeland and once for Best Actress in a TV movie or miniseries for the HBO film Temple Grandin. The series is the latest big production for Apple TV+, which scored an industry coup when its film CODA won the Oscar for Best Picture this year.
