A new book about the filming of Mad Max: Fury Road, called Blood, Sweat & Chrome, has just hit shelves, and one of the main stories in the said book is about a heated fight between costars Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy. Now while it doesn’t seem like either of those actors would do anything provocative enough to warrant being canceled in this turbulent culture of ours, it sure seems as if they nearly came to a point of no return with one another. During this massive blowout on the set of the film, it has been revealed that Hardy was being chastised so badly by Theron, it almost turned into a fight.
The book details what it took to make the magnanimous film, and there had apparently been a great deal of pressure placed on both Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy. Their work schedules were said to be grueling and they both had no trust in one another, which led to the tipping point. Hardy had apparently not been a morning person whatsoever, while Theron was always the ore professional type that showed up early on the set. She had been waiting in full costume and makeup for him to show up, and once he did three hours later, she let him have it. The cameraman details the experience, “She jumps out of the War Rig, and she starts swearing her head off at him,” he continues “she said ‘fine the f****** c*** a hundred thousand dollars for every minute that he’s held up this crew!'” It sure sounds as if the pair were tired of one another’s company.
Apparently, Tom Hardy got upset at Theron’s anger-fueled tirade and charged in her direction while saying, “What did you say to me?” The whole ordeal left Theron feeling threatened due to his aggression, and she asked the producer Denise Di Novi to fly in and shadow her for the duration of filming. Thankfully nothing happened between the two that would cause either of them to tarnish their records, and they both seem to speak about it now with more of a sense of humor or understanding about it. Theron said “We were either fighting or we were icing each other — I don’t know which one is worse — and they had to deal with it in the back. It was horrible! We should not have done that; we should have been better. I can own up to that.” Hardy has an equally leveled response when asked about the big fight. According to him, “The pressure on both of us was overwhelming at times. What she needed was a better, perhaps more experienced partner in me… I’d like to think that now that I’m older and uglier, I could rise to that occasion.”
It sounds as if the pressure of making such an epic film got to both of them, and that pressure could have been the deciding factor to not go ahead with a sequel with both returning as costars. Charlize Theron might have turned down starring in the prequel called, Furiosa, due to the insurmountable pressure of having to deliver on one of the biggest films of 2015. Despite Tom Hardy and Theron nearly tearing each other head’s off, Mad Max: Fury Road was a massive critical success. The film grossed over $374 million worldwide and was considered a box office flop. However, it was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won six which include Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design, to name a few.
Mad Max: Fury Road became one of the most talked-about films of 2015, and both Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron were praised for their performances. Besides the Furiosa prequel, two other Mad Max sequels are reportedly in the works, with one having a working title of Mad Max: The Wasteland.
