Everyone Is Saying The Same Thing About Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick
Critics got an early look at Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick and everyone is saying the same thing about this highly-anticipated film
After 36 years, multiple production delays, a global pandemic, pushed back release schedules, and a million question marks, we are finally about to feel the need, the need for speed once again. Tom Cruise is getting close to bringing Top Gun: Maverick to the big screen for the masses, a chance to catch up with and wrap up the story for Pete Mitchell’s titular callsign. It’s been a long time coming and some of the first folks in the industry are getting a chance to see the final product. The early reactions aren’t just good, they are phenomenal. By all early accounts, Tom Cruise has put together one of the best films of the year, a fitting sequel for the original movie that came out decades ago.
With CinemaCon rolling in Las Vegas this past week, a number of big pieces of news and early looks happened for industry insiders. One of them was an early screening of Top Gun: Maverick, though Tom Cruise wasn’t in attendance himself (he’s off filming Mission Impossible 7 and 8). Those who got to see the first look at this follow-up story were blown away. And though there’s currently a review embargo on the film, plenty of critics jumped online to share their first reactions to the film. Check out some of the glowing opinions:
And this kind of praise is all the way down the line for Tom Cruise and Top Gun: Maverick with folks loving the performances, the effects, the flight scenes, the callbacks to the original, the continuing of the story, and the ability to bring this certain movie to the big screen for a new audience. What could very well have been a misstep, rolling Tom Cruise back out as a 60-year-old “flyboy” to train a new group of aviators in an oddball kind of “we’re too old for this” moment, was anything but. Critics seem to love nearly every minute of it and it’s easy to see why with even brief looks at some of the early trailers.
In Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise returns to the place that started it all, never having moved up in the Navy the way some of his peers did from the first movie. And the time has meant resetting the deck with a new cast of characters including Miles Teller as Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s former RIO Goose (Anthony Edwards) who died in the Top Gun. Also here are Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Glenn Powell, Lewis Pullman, Jay Ellis, and even a return for Val Kilmer as Iceman (he’s an Admiral now).
And it won’t be long until we catch Tom Cruise in this movie. Top Gun: Maverick is set for wide release on May 27th. If these early opinions are any indication, we might just be getting one of the best films of the year. And it seems like there’s almost no doubt that fans of the original will love a return to the cockpit with Tom Cruise and company.
