What do Sir Patrick Stewart, Wesley Snipes, and Tom Cruise all have in common? For one, they are all critically acclaimed actors. But more importantly, they are critically acclaimed actors rumored to appear in Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. If the rumors are true, it would be a welcome surprise for Marvel fans to see Stewart and Snipes reignite the superheroes that molded the superhero genre into the well-oiled machine it is today. For Cruise, however, it would be his first jaunt into the comic genre of film. While the rumors are still just that, fans are eagerly imagining Cruise as the Superior Iron Man, and the impressive fan art has us hoping more than ever that the Jerry Maguire star has found a home within the MCU.

Marvel fan art can be found strewn across the internet, but one account, in particular, has a lot of people buzzing over the excitement surrounding Tom Cruises’ inclusion in the MCU. One Instagram user,@diamonddead, shared his fan art drawings depicting Cruise as the Tony Stark variant facing off against The Sorceror Supreme. In the photos, Cruise is wearing the black-and-white Superior Iron Man suit just like in the Marvel comics. The photo appears to depict the variant Iron Man coming from a portal conjured by Strange, insinuating his arrival is from another dimension. Similarly, the artist made sure to include some of Tom Cruise’s defining features to further tease the speculations.
Since first premiering at the beginning of this year’s Super Bowl, the newest trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has left Marvel fans reeling at the hidden gems to unpack in the short 2-minute trailer. And while plenty of the talk has focused on the halfway mark of the teaser that features a dark figure most people believe to be Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, we also were treated to a snippet of what may have been Iron Man. As we know Robert Downy Jr. is definitely retired from the titanium alloy suit, fans began speculating that the person in question is actually Tom Cruise. Cruise has been rumored to be joining the MCU for a while now, and what better way than to recast him as the beloved Iron Man.
With the introduction of the multiverse in phase four, the opportunities are endless when it comes to Marvel execs giving themselves options to work with new and returning celebs. Tom Cruise could easily be introduced as an Iron Man variant, or more likely what is called Superior Iron Man. In the Marvel comics, Superior Iron Man is the villainous version of the heroic Avenger. And given we have likely gotten our first looks at the big bad opposites of both Dr. Strange and Wandavision, it would only make sense to include the most famous Avenger as well.
It remains unclear as to where the rumors of Tom Cruise’s involvement with the MCU began. However, Cruise has previously admitted to auditioning to play the original Tony Stark before the role went to Robert Downey Jr. As usual with the studio, Marvel and Cruise remain silent on the rumors of his involvement, which only adds to more hype surrounding the rumor. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will land in theaters on May 6th and we likely will not get any clear-cut answer on the rumors until the movie debuts.
