Tom Cruise is back on top of the world following the historical performance of Top Gun: Maverick, but the mad geniuses at The Nerdist have reimagined the action star as Santa Claus. The insane mashup of Top Gun: Maverick and The Santa Clause demonstrates just how well the two franchises could work, since it’s easy to reach all the children in the world when going Mach 10. Perhaps most impressive about the short video, is how well the dialogue crosses over from movie to movie, Jon Hamm mentioning how Maverick wasn’t on the list is pure perfection.

Tom Cruise should make Top Gun: Yuletide an actual movie, sending the reindeers to Top Elf, and training the sled team to accomplish their Christmas Eve mission. At the very least he’d do a better job than Jack Skellington did when he briefly took over for Santa. As the mashup mentions, this only came about because of Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick co-star, Glen Powell, sent out a Tweet laying out the plot of the fake movie.

Top Gun: Yuletide is, unfortunately, not a real movie (yet), but it is already a better Christmas film than Tom Cruise’s only holiday movie to date, Eyes Wide Shut. Yes, the erotic thriller he made with his then-wife, Nicole Kidman, under the discerning gaze of legendary director Stanley Kubrick, is a Christmas movie. The steamy thriller takes place over the Christmas season, which makes sense given its about a husband and wife trying to save their marriage through kinky sex, perfect for the holiday.

On the other hand, Top Gun: Maverick is so universal in its themes, that it brings people together like a holiday classic. In true Tom Cruise daredevil fashion, the star really filmed scenes in the Navy fighter jets, an incredible feat that could only really be topped by actually flying a sleigh through the air pulled by reindeer. The long in development sequel remains one of the most successful movies in history, with its overall placement depending on how Avatar: The Way of Water does before the end of the year.

Tom Cruise isn’t the only airborne expert experiencing a resurgence, as The Santa Clause star Tim Allen was back in his signature holiday role through the Disney+ series, The Santa Clauses. Picking up 30 years after the first film, Allen’s Scott Calvin needs to re-discover his Christmas mojo, just as Maverick needs to get back up in the air with Top Gun. Just as Top Gun: Maverick was a huge hit, the return of Scott Calvin was a massive success for Disney, again proving that a back to basics approach to storytelling, design, and writing can pay off huge in today’s entertainment environment.

Top Gun: Yuletide may not be real, but it is an amazing testament to the skills of The Nerdist editors and the solid, universal designs of Top Gun: Maverick and The Santa Clause. Tom Cruise has already achieved almost everything an actor can earn in Hollywood, but a family-friendly Christmas film is one thing missing from his impressive resume. It’s time to go to Top Elf.
