Tom Cruise Officially Has A New High Record
Tom Cruise is the king of blockbuster summer movies, but it turns out he has outdone even himself this time around.
Tom Cruise and Top Gun: Maverick continues to soar over his previous box office records. The latest personal record for the actor is Top Gun: Maverick becoming his highest-grossing movie worldwide with $806 million and counting. This tops his previous record-holder with Mission: Impossible — Fallout, which ended its run with around $791 million globally. Top Gun: Maverick has the chance to go even higher, with projections saying that the film will top $900 million globally. It may even reach the $1 billion mark if it is able to exceed expectations. The movie is being held back slightly since it isn’t being released in Russia and China.
Top: Gun Maverick acts as a direct sequel to the original Top Gun, with Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell getting called back to Top Gun one last time. His mission is to train a batch of Top Gun’s best pilots to complete a mission that they might not all make it back from. Amongst the pilot candidates is Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s late radio operator and friend, Goose. Miles Teller plays Rooster, with the rest of the cast being rounded out by Jennifer Connelly, Val Kilmer, Jon Hamm, Charles Parnell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Jay Ellis, Glen Powell, and more. Joseph Kosinski directs with a story and script by Peter Craig.
It’s no surprise that Top Gun: Maverick is shooting up the box office charts. The word-of-mouth has been nothing but positive, and the Rotten Tomatoes score is currently sitting at an incredible 97% from critics and 99% from audiences. It’s the rare example of a movie sequel coming years later and managing to do everything better than the classic original. Who knows how high the box office bar will be set for this movie when it’s all over, but it does seem like it’s going to be difficult for Tom Cruise to top it again.
The worldwide box office record is just the latest accolade Tom Cruise can add for Top Gun: Maverick. Previously, it took the title of his top-grossing domestic movie from War of the Worlds, which earned $243 million. It also took the tile of Tom Cruise’s biggest opening weekend ever. Tom Cruise is not one to shy away from major blockbusters — in fact, it’s basically his entire career at this point — so the records that Top Gun: Maverick is breaking for Cruise certainly aren’t easy ones to surpass.
Of course, there’s no slowing the now 59-year-old Tom Cruise down. He’s currently in the middle of filming the second part of his next Mission Impossible film, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning — Part 2. Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning — Part 1 is already in post-production with an expected 2023 release. The second part is expected to come out the following year. There’s no telling how much money these are going to rake in, but it’s a safe guess that it will probably be a lot. Whether or not they’re able to surpass the Top Gun: Maverick juggernaut remains to be seen.
