Tom Cruise is gearing up to finish off the Mission: Impossible franchise which has been running for more than 25 years now. It’s been a heck of a ride so far with the movies only upping the stakes, action, and stunts along the way. The final two movies are in the works now with release dates over the next few years. If the last few installments are any indication then these could be some real spectacles, replete with more and more death-defying set pieces. And now we are getting some more details around the final two films with the titles released this week. It would seem they are very much connected and will round out the franchise over the course of the two flicks.

The announcement about the next two movies came from CinemaCon (via The Hollywood Reporter) with Tom Cruise delivering a pre-recorded speech about the films. The final two Tom Cruise-led Mission: Impossible movies will be titled Mission: Impossible 7 – Dead Reckoning: Part 1 and Dead Reckoning: Part 2. These titles are heavy on the colons, but also point to some characters maybe not making it out alive by the time things are all said and done. It’s an ominous feeling one gets for how this franchise could shake out when things finally come to an end.

Apparently, during this presentation at CinemaCon that was meant to promote both Mission: Impossible 7, as well as Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise was seen standing up in a small plane that was flying high in the sky. He was joined up there by another plane in which director Christopher McQuarrie was riding. The two mentioned they were still filming, and therefore couldn’t be there at the live event. It was then that both planes performed an aerial maneuver before cutting away. In this way, it’s clear Tom Cruise just gets it from a promotional standpoint. The Mission: Impossible films have been high adrenaline in recent iterations and that’s looking very much set to continue.

Mission: Impossible 7 – Dead Reckoning: Part 1 and then Part 2 will wrap up the story for Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt and, presumably, the rest of the crew who’s been along for the ride in this franchise. Ving Rhames is back as Luther Stickell, having appeared in every movie so far. Simon Pegg returns as Benji Dunn. He joined things in the Misson: Impossible III. Others coming back in some shape or form will be Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust, Vanessa Kirby as the White Widow, and Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge who was last seen in the franchise’s first film. Plus, Hayley Atwell has signed on for these last two along with Esai Morales.

But we are still a ways off from seeing Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part 1. The movie isn’t set to hit the big screen until next summer, July 14, 2023. The original plan was to shoot the final two films back-to-back, but the pandemic got in the way of that plan. It’s meant some delayed timelines for this franchise, but if the other movies were any indication at all, it will have been well worth the wait.
