Simon Pegg admits that he worries about Tom Cruise dying doing his stunts.
Tom Cruise is a fearless filmmaker. The people surrounding him can seldom say the same. During a red carpet interview with Deadline Hollywood, Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One co-star Simon Pegg revealed he and the other members of the film’s team were always scared that Cruise’s next big stunt could be his last.
“Tom is jumping off cliffs on a motorbike, he’s hanging off trains… It’s genuinely dangerous stuff,” Pegg said. “And there’s always a sense that… one day something might go wrong and we might lose Tom. Anytime there’s a big stunt, we all have that sense of fear. But he always pulls it off.”
Indeed, he always pulls it off. Tom Cruise has been making Mission: Impossible films for nearly three decades (the first film came out in 1996). The star is known for doing much of his own stunt work, and in each film, he pushes the limits of what is possible.
As Pegg mentioned, Tom Cruise jumps off an enormous cliff on a motorbike in this summer’s Dead Reckoning. After Cruise landed the epic stunt, he radioed director Chris McQuarry to ask for another take.
It is that willingness to push the limit that makes Tom Cruise movies such a thrill to watch. That quality pushed Top Gun: Maverick to nearly the $1.5 billion mark at the box office in 2022, and it has kept the Mission: Impossible franchise fresh all these years.
Early reactions to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One have been glowing following the film’s premiere in Rome. The franchise’s seventh installment will crash into theaters July 12, 2023, going toe to toe with other July box office heavyweights like Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
Simon Pegg once again joins Tom Cruise as Benji, the super spy team’s resident tech genius. Pegg has provided nervous energy and tension-cutting quips since joining the franchise in 2006’s Mission: Impossible 3. Judging from Pegg’s red-carpet interview, his character’s apprehension about Ethan Hunt’s dangerous escapades comes from a very real place.
Returning alongside Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg are familiar franchise faces Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, and Ving Rhames. The latest edition also introduces Hayley Atwell, Cary Elwes, and Pom Klementieff to the star-studded cast.
Dead Reckoning Part Two is scheduled to conclude the Mission: Impossible franchise when it hits theaters next year. After that, Tom Cruise will raise the crazy bar yet again in his collaboration with SpaceX. That film is planned to be shot largely aboard the International Space Station.

In between bouts of worrying about Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg will appear later this year in Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose, as well as in Season 4 of Amazon’s superhero satire The Boys. Pegg is on the hook about another trip to space himself as he and the rest of the Enterprise crew await a fourth Star Trek film to add to the Kelvin Timeline.
Pegg is not the only one holding his breath when Tom Cruise does his stunts. Cruise always keeps his crew and fanbase a little sick to their stomachs, and that’s just how he likes it. His co-workers may be scared that he will die doing stunts, but those stunts have already made Tom Cruise immortal.
