Tom Cruise was recently surprised with the most prestigious award at the Cannes Film Festival. He was completely shocked when receiving an honorary Palme d’Or, and it led to a rousing speech about the man being in love with film and the big screen. That dedication is something that he echoed with his decision to not allow Top Gun: Maverick to be streamed on any site. He wants people to see the film in the theater, in the way that it should be watched. That dedication has paid off, as Top Gun: Maverick is now the biggest Memorial Day opening film ever. The film grossed $151 million domestically and earned a total of $248 million worldwide through the weekend, which is also the best three-day stretch for a film that Cruise has ever been in.
Disney is debating the record of $151 million, as they claim that Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End holds the record at $153 million from 2006. But besides the small $2 million difference, Top Gun: Maverick is the first film to achieve that level of success in a long time. Fans have been seeing the new Tom Cruise movie in droves. The film currently sits at $260 million worldwide, as the international markets are open. That is a huge amount of money already, and it looks to be like Top Gun 2 might be the blockbuster film that everyone thought it would become. The film also holds a staggering 96% “certified fresh” critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. And even after having more than 5,000 verified audience reviews, it also holds a 99% audience approval rating. Those are some huge numbers.
Top Gun: Maverick follows Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise), who is still a pilot after 30 years. He has evaded promotion so he can continue to fly. After a mistake with some very expensive equipment, Maverick is tasked to become a Top Gun instructor, at the behest of Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (Val Kilmer). He must now lead a group of the best fighter pilots and show them how he does things. Among the group of hotshot fighter pilots is Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, who is the son of Maverick’s late best friend, Goose.
Sometimes when sequels to films come out so long after the original, they often fall flat. However, that is not the case with Top Gun: Maverick. Tom Cruise is spectacular in the film, as is the rest of the cast. That is clearly the case given how much money the movie has already pulled in at the box office. This one is worth a watch. Even for fans who didn’t grow up with the original film. The first Top Gun film is currently streaming on Netflix for those who want to catch up to catch this highly excitable sequel.
Top Gun: Maverick is the reason why Tom Cruise was awarded an honorary Palme d’Or, which highlighted his entire career. He was also given a five-minute standing ovation for his work on the film. Go check out why everyone is praising this film, and why it is breaking box office records. Disney can claim it’s still in the lead, but it doesn’t matter. $151 million in three days is huge.
