Tobey Maguire Recreates An Iconic Spider-Man Moment Every Day
Tobey Maguire told a Reddit AMA that he performs the dance moves from Spider-Man 3 every morning.
Tobey Maguire takes a moment every day to perform the infamous “Bully Maguire” dance from Spider-Man 3. According to a recent Reddit AMA, the Babylon actor is not only aware of how much of a meme the notorious sequence in which a symbiote-infected Peter Parker dances down a New York City street has become, he has wholly embraced it. Specifically, Tobey Maguire responded to a question asking if he could still do the dance in the affirmative, adding that he does it “Every morning when I wake up. Just trying to capture the joy of this little guy.”
Here’s the little guy in question:
The above video went viral earlier this year, showcasing a child seemingly recreating Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 3 dance. As with many viral sensations, the concept of an adorable child doing pretty much anything captures public attention, but add in the most famous moment in one of the odder superhero movies ever made, and it is no wonder that it blew up online.
It should also be said that it is possible that Maguire was having a little fun with his Reddit AMA and he does not actually do a Cabaret-inspired dance move each morning along with his morning coffee. While Tobey Maguire has never shied away from his legacy as Spider-Man, it probably does not consume his every waking moment.
Tobey Maguire donned the red and blue suit of Spider-Man for the third time in 2007, joining forces with Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, and director Sam Raimi for what would become a confusing and controversial movie. While Spider-Man 3 would go on to be the most commercially successful movie in Raimi’s trilogy, eventually grossing $895 million dollars, it was generally perceived as a creative disappointment compared to the first two movies.
Since Tobey Maguire left the role of Spider-Man, the series has been rebooted twice: once with Andrew Garfield for Sony Pictures and once with Tom Holland as part of Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. All three actors would star in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home as parallel universe versions of Peter Parker. While Andrew Garfield denied that he would be in the film in various interviews, Tobey Maguire apparently freely admitted that he was returning to the role of Spider-Man.
While Tobey Maguire did not get the send-off that fans might have hoped for with Spider-Man 3, it appears he still has some fondness for it (or at least, for the goofy dance moves he got to show off). There were plans for him to continue playing Peter Parker for at least one more movie (and possibly up to three more), all of which were scuttled. Since then, Maguire starred in Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 adaptation of The Great Gatsby with Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan, the animated film Boss Baby, and, most recently, the Brad Pitt/Margot Robbie Hollywood period piece Babylon. There are no current indications that he will bust out any of his old moves for that film, but we can always hope.
