Tina Fey Taking Over SNL Gets A Little More Real
Could Tina Fey be the next leader behind the fan-favorite weekly sketch series, SNL? Current producer and creator Lorne Michaels thinks so. It’s been almost five decades since Michaels first debuted his comedy project in 1975 and it soon may be time for him to retire. As he looks to the future of the uber-successful program, Michaels believes that he may have found a replacement in Saturday Night Live alum Tina Fey.
Lorne Michaels Believes Tina Fey Is His Perfect Replacement
One of the many celebrities present on the red carpet at the 2023 make-up Emmy Awards, which were held on Monday night, Lorne Michaels was posed with the question of who he sees doing the job right when he finally decides to step down. A seemingly easy answer, Michaels said that Tina Fey would be an excellent choice to pick up the baton and keep SNL running like the well-oiled machine that it is.
“It could easily be Tina Fey,” Lorne Michaels said of his possible SNL predecessor. Going back on his quick response, Lorne added that there are many other “people” who know the job inside and out and would be up for the task. But, it sounds like Michaels has a soft spot in his heart for the 30 Rock star as he went on to refer to her as “brilliant,” adding that the actress and comedian was “a very important person in my life.”
When Will Lorne Michaels Step Down?
Regardless of who may be stepping up to take over the dynasty, Tina Fey or otherwise, Lorne Michaels says that he’s not quite done with his baby just yet. February 2025 will ring in SNL’s 50th anniversary, a celebration that Lorne Michales plans to be there for, still in his high brass position. However, he did allude to the idea that prior to the big 5-0, he and the others at the top would be deciding on who will take over for him after he leaves, meaning that a decision is just one year away.
Tina Fey Started As A Writer For SNL
As for Tina Fey’s history with SNL, after getting her sea legs courtesy of Chicago’s famous improv troupe, The Second City, the comedian and actress took New York City by storm. She would first join Saturday Night Live, like many of its other sprawling alumni, as a writer in 1997. Quickly rising through the ranks, she was promoted to head writer just two years later. By 2000, Fey was a regular, performing in sketches alongside other cast members including Jimmy Fallon.
Tine Fey Moves Up And On
After six years of sitting behind the table and running the show’s fan-favorite Weekend Update sketch, Tina Fey decided it was time to move on from SNL in 2006. She then got her own NBC sitcom, 30 Rock, on which she also served as showrunner. In the time between SNL and 30 Rock, she put out and starred in the classic comedy, Mean Girls, which just celebrated the release of its Broadway version which was adapted into film form.
The Only Choice
Throughout her decades-long career in comedy, Tina Fey has kept audiences laughing and even recently appeared alongside her frequent collaborator and close friend, Amy Poehler, on an Emmy-centered Weekend Update. The perfect choice to step into the big shoes that will be left to fill after Lorne Michaels departs from his position, we’re happy to know that Fey is a frontrunner for the job.Source: Entertainment Weekly
