Timothee Chalamet Is Going To Sing For Bob Dylan Biopic
Timothee Chalamet will sing Bob Dylan's songs while playing him in the biopic, A Complete Unknown.
The career of Timothee Chalamet is rolling like a stone. In addition to this year’s Dune: Part Two and Wonka, the actor is set to appear in a Bob Dylan biopic for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold. The film is expected to begin filming this August, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, Chalamet will flex his chops as a singer in the film.
James Mangold was revealed at Star Wars Celebration to be directing a new film for the far, far away franchise. While doing press at the event, Mangold discussed his Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, with Collider. When asked if Timothee Chalamet would sing in the film, Mangold simply said, “Of course!”
A Complete Unknown was adapted by screenwriter Jay Cocks from Elijah Wald’s 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric. For James Mangold, the film examines a critical moment, not just in the life of Bob Dylan, but in American music.
Timothee Chalamet will play the folk music icon as the film follows Bob Dylan’s move to New York City, his integration into the folk scene, and his ascension to worldwide recognition. Mangold also teased that the film would include music legends like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Joan Baez.
A Complete Unknown will not be the first time Timothee Chalamet sings on the big screen. This December, he will belt it out in Wonka, a film detailing the origins of the whimsical chocolatier. Chalamet divulged that he has seven musical numbers in the film.
Time will tell whether or not Timothee Chalamet can top that number when he takes the stage as Bob Dylan. A Complete Unknown comes on the heels of a slew of music biopics such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and Elvis. The film is still in pre-production; no release date has yet been announced.
As James Mangold prepares for his team up with Timothee Chalamet, the high-profile director is spinning a lot of plates. He is wrapping up his Indiana Jones film, set to hit theaters June 30. He is also developing Swamp Thing for James Gunn and Peter Safran at DC, and writing his Star Wars movie.
Subtitled Dawn of the Jedi, the film is said to take place 25,000 years before the events of the original Star Wars, exploring the discovery of the Force and the origins of the Jedi.
Mangold’s project was one of several announced at the celebration. It was also revealed that Daisy Ridley would return to the Star Wars universe as Rey for director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. That film will track the young Jedi’s attempt to rebuild the Jedi order, using ancient texts and her personal experiences as a guide.
Timothee Chalamet has nothing scheduled beyond A Complete Unknown, but that is unlikely to remain the case for long. Chalamet has been in high demand since his 2017 breakout Call Me By Your Name, appearing in arthouse indies and mega-hit blockbusters alike.
Music biopics have attracted a lot of Oscar attention in recent years, and a turn as Bob Dylan could serve Timothee Chalamet much the same way Elvis exploded Austin Butler’s career. Exactly when audiences will catch Chalamet as Dylan is unknown, but when it happens, it is bound to be music to our ears.
