See What It Would Look Like If Tim Burton Directed The New Harry Potter Series
Instagram creator mysticdrawsai has visualized Harry, Hermione, and Ron as Tim Burton animated characters.
The recent announcement of a new Harry Potter series developed by Warner Discovery for the newly rebranded MAX streaming service has fans abuzz with a number of questions. The series, which is still in the early stages of pre-production, isn’t estimated to hit the streamer until the 2025 or 2026 season, with no word yet on how the WGA strike will impact production. Thankfully, Instagram pages such as @mysticdrawsai have been keeping fans busy with interesting art developed using artificial intelligence, depicting the classic Harry Potter characters we know and love in the style of a Tim Burton-directed film.
Tim Burton’s iconic macabre aesthetic has been a fan favorite for decades, dating back to early successes in the filmmaker’s career including Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and a pair of hugely successful Batman outings starring Michael Keaton in 1989 and 1992 respectively. While the filmmaker has never helmed a Harry Potter project, the Venn diagram of fans of Tim Burton and the franchise has enormous overlap, leading many to feel that it’s only a matter of time before the director takes the reins. Additionally, frequent Tim Burton collaborator Johnny Depp appeared in a leading role in the Harry Potter spin-off films Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, as well as the sequel Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
Each of the Instagram posts depicts the iconic Harry Potter characters in three different distinctive Tim Burton styles, including live-action, computer animated, and drawn in 2D. The characters being reimagined include Daniel Radcliffe‘s Harry Potter, Rupert Grint’s Ron Weasley, and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger. The three illustrious child stars have grown into mature performers since the 2011 conclusion of the Harry Potter film series, each going on to work with esteemed directors and focus more on independent film projects.
Radcliffe, of course, has gone on to portray Weird Al Yankovich in the recent pseudo-biopic Weird: The Al Yankovich Story, as well as working with the Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All At Once director duo The Daniels on the 2016 film Swiss Army Man. Grint recently starred in M. Night Shyamalan‘s most recent film A Knock at the Cabin, and had a leading role in the Apple TV+ original series Servant, while Watson is currently slated to appear beside Samuel L. Jackson in an upcoming series titled Dynamo: Mind Over Magic, according to IMDb. While the Harry Potter art depicts the three actors taking up their roles in Tim Burton’s aesthetic, there is currently no word on whether the trio will be reprising their roles for the new series.
With AI art becoming so advanced, fans now have the opportunity to visualize their deepest desires in minutes, as if they had access to the Mirror of Erised. While it will likely be a long while before we get any major news or casting updates for the upcoming Harry Potter series, fans would certainly jump for joy if Tim Burton could sign on to direct even just a handful of episodes.
