After working on Jojo Rabbit and Next Goal Wins, Taika Waititi is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Thor: Love and Thunder. Speaking about the highly anticipated Thor 4, the director says it’s the craziest thing he’s ever done.
In an interview with Empire, the Thor 4 director gave fans a more detailed explanation of that statement. “I’ve done some crazy shit in my life. I’ve lived, like, ten lifetimes. But it’s the craziest film I’ve ever done,” Waititi said.
He went on to explain that if you wrote down all the elements of Thor 4, it shouldn’t make sense. Adding that it’s almost like it shouldn’t be made. “If you walked into a room and said, ‘I want this and this and this.’ Who’s in it? These people. What are you going to call it? Love And Thunder. I mean, you’d never work again. Maybe I won’t after this.”
Thor: Love and Thunder is the latest installment in the Thor franchise and is intended to be a direct sequel to 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. It is also the 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and is directed by Taika Waititi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. This will be the ninth appearance of Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While plot details about Thor 4 remain scarce, the film will mark the return of Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, a character who has been absent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. It’s also been confirmed that the story will focus on Jane Foster becoming the Mighty Thor. And Gorr the God Butcher will be the primary villain of the movie.
Set images have shown Thor hanging out with his Guardians of the Galaxy pals, which means that they’ve maintained their relationship after the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Natalie Portman was also spotted during filming and looked quite hero-like on set.
So if Thor 4 incorporates Jason Aaron’s run on The Mighty Thor and elements of Marvel’s 2014 Original Sin storyline (which explains how Thor lost his powers), Jane Foster might take up the mantle and powers of Thor permanently.
According to comic book lore, the God of Thunder becomes unworthy of wielding Mjolnir after learning a secret from Nick Fury. Although Thor initially attempts to reclaim the hammer, he eventually relinquishes the name and role after seeing Jane wield its power.
Starring alongside Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster are Tessa Thompson, Chris Pratt, Jaimie Alexander, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, and Jeff Goldblum. Academy Award winner Christian Bale will make his MCU debut as Gorr the God Butcher. Russell Crowe also is confirmed to have a cameo appearance as Zeus, the King of the Olympians.
Taika Waititi struck a different, more comedic tone from other Marvel movies with Thor: Ragnarok and the director has assured fans that Thor 4 will have a mood all its own. “It’s very different from Ragnarok. It’s crazier. I’ll tell you what’s different. There’ll be far more emotion in this film. And a lot more love. And a lot more thunder. And a lot more Thor, if you’ve seen the photos.”
Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled to hit theaters on May 6, 2022.
