Longevity has been the name of the game for a series like The Walking Dead, which premiered on the AMC Network in 2010 and will conclude its eleventh season on cable television next month. With several spin-offs and major actors that have appeared on the drama since its inception, the series has become a staple of the network and fan fiction for over a decade. On a recent episode of The Walking Dead, fans noticed what appeared to be Freddy Krueger as one of the walkers on the show, and they have taken to social media to share their delight in seeing the Halloween type of surprise on the show’s final season.
According to a report by MovieWeb, audiences who watched the latest episode of The Walking Dead this week noticed that the Nightmare on Elm Street killer, Freddy Krueger, seemed to appear as a zombie walker. With screenshots and clips of the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo, fans of the series shared their thoughts on the surprise with posts on Twitter, with some remarking that The Walking Dead is known for paying homage to horror fiction that came before it.
The scene in question has to do with Daryl, played by Norman Reedus, and Maggie, portrayed by Lauren Cohan, walking through a sewer as they are approached by what appears to be a zombie who looks exactly like the famous Krueger.
The popularity of cameos on a long-running series like The Walking Dead should come as no surprise to loyal fans both domestically and internationally, especially one as relevant as Freddy Krueger. The show has had its fair share of homages paid to other horror and science fiction movies in the past, as zombies resembling characters from Dawn of the Dead and even one from RoboCop have appeared in some fashion throughout the show’s 170 episodes. The series is nearing its last few episodes for the entire run of the show, so there may be some surprises left up AMC’s sleeve when it comes to appealing to its fanbase.
As The Walking Dead showcased a bit of humor by including a zombie that looks identical to Freddy Krueger, striped sweater and all, the show is enjoying a well-deserved finish to its run on cable television. Based on the comic book of the same name by Robert Kirkman and created by Frank Darabont of The Shawshank Redemption fame, The Walking Dead has been a vehicle to launch many mainstream careers from actors who weren’t household names yet, like Reedus, Love Actually’s Andrew Lincoln, The Wolf of Wall Street star Jon Bernthal, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Sons of Anarchy actor Ryan Hurst.
The post-apocalyptic series The Walking Dead has spawned several spin-offs, including Fear the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, as well as several currently untitled series that will debut after the flagship series goes off the air, many of which will include reprisal of characters played by Norman Reedus, Andrew Lincoln, Danai Gurira, Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and many more.
