With only eight episodes remaining in the final season of The Walking Dead, AMC has released a batch of first-look images from the series via Entertainment Weekly. A group of menacing-looking Commonwealth soldiers, brandishing weapons while decked out in their familiar white armor are seen in the first photo. Another shows Daryl alongside a very blurry Aaron. And the final shot features a stern-looking Carol doing some busy work in her kitchen.

Speaking to the publication, showrunner Angela Kang also hinted at what fans can expect from the last eight episodes. “There are going to be some twists and turns in the journey, but also some really beautiful emotional scenes,” she said of The Walking Dead. Kang also explained how there will be strength in numbers unlike the second block of episodes, in which the characters outside the walls of the Commonwealth were torn apart. In the last part of the story, the gang is back together, moving with a common purpose. “There’s always a particular fun that comes with that for us and for fans who like to see what happens when the group is doing their thing as a unit,” she added.

The Walking Dead’s swansong will also see Norman Reedus’ Daryl and Melissa McBride’s Carol doing their thing. According to Kang, Daryl is thrust into the role of a leader as the story progresses. But he brings his own style to the job and does it is different than some of the others. “Daryl is not someone who likes to give a lot of speeches. He kind of likes to do,” she explained. Known for outwitting and outlasting those that try to harm her folks, Carol he gets to have some memorable moments with the show’s villains and heroes.

The Walking Dead image drop comes as the cast and creators prepare for their last appearance at San Diego Comic-Con on July 22nd. “There are going to be some tears shed,” Kang admitted of the sentimental bunch. The last installment of the popular horror series debuted in August 2021. Consisting of 24 episodes, the series will conclude in the coming months. The story begins with threats (dead and alive) lurking around every corner as each group gets caught in uncontrollable situations. As the looming pressure builds towards a day of reckoning for all, will the sum of their individual journeys cumulate into one, or divide them forever? (via Comic Book).

Developed for television by Frank Darabont, The Walking Dead is based on the comic book series by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. The latest season uses material from issues #175–193. The story chronicles the group’s encounter with a large network of communities (known as the Commonwealth) with advanced equipment and over 50,000 survivors living in different settlements. It also explores the confrontation with the Reapers, a mysterious faction of hostile survivors that attacked and took Meridian.

Once the flagship series wraps, fans can look forward to The Walking Dead spin-off series, Daryl & Carol. Created by Angela Kang and Scott M. Gimple, the follow-up was announced by AMC in September 2020. The story will feature Reedus and McBride as their characters Daryl and Carol, respectively. The show is set to premiere in 2023 after the 11th season of the main series ends.
