The Stephen King Epic Series That Conquered TV Gets Gorgeous New Release
Stephen King’s novel The Stand has had a couple of adaptations, but the 1994 miniseries still stands tall as the definitive version for many people. Now, Paramount Home Media Distribution is giving fans a chance to get the best version possible of the series on Blu-ray with the upcoming release of a Limited SteelBook edition of the film. The release is in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the miniseries and will be available exclusively at Walmart on September 24.
The Stand
The Stand miniseries takes place in an apocalyptic future where most of humanity has been wiped out by a plague. The remaining survivors of this work break into groups of good and evil, with followers of the demonic Randall Flagg working to rebuild the world according to his vision and a group of four attempting to stop Flagg and his followers from taking over what’s left of the world.
The miniseries aired in four parts titled “The Plague,” “The Dream,” “The Betrayal,” and “The Stand,” with Mick Garris directing and Stephen King writing all four.
Cast
The Stand miniseries features an all-star cast that includes Gary Sinise, Miguel Ferrer, Rob Lowe, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Jamey Sheridan, Laura San Giacomo, Molly Ringwald, Corin Nemec, Adam Storke, Ray Walston, Ed Harris, and Matt Frewer. Stephen King himself even has a minor role in the series.
The series also has great reviews if you’ve never seen it before, with the Rotten Tomatoes critic score at 70 percent and the audience score at 71 percent. It even managed to get nominated for six Primetime Emmy Awards and take home two for makeup and sound mixing.
Steelbook
This Limited SteelBook edition of The Stand miniseries seems like it’ll not only be the best way to watch the film, bringing the resolution up to modern standards but also a great addition to any collector’s movie shelf.
The front of the SteelBook artwork features the four heroes of the series walking across the apocalyptic landscape while the back features a crow perched on a skull.
While the current listing for the 30th Anniversary edition doesn’t list any additional special features, the modern resolution and the cool art might be enough of a reason to pick this one up.
Special Features
With the release of The Stand miniseries special edition coming in late September, there’s always the chance that an updated listing will come out that lists all the additional goodies that can be found on the disc.
It seems unlikely that a special limited edition would leave out special features altogether, especially since the miniseries remains the best adaptation of this seminal King novel. The 2020 miniseries adaptation of the book had mixed reviews, so it’s possible we might not see another adaptation any time soon.
