By Britta DeVore | Published

Although recent years have seen him releasing multiple flops like Trap and Old, the movie that put M. Night Shyamalan on the map is still one of the genre’s best to this day. Soon, Hulu subscribers will have a chance to see the filmmaker at the top of his game as The Sixth Sense is set to arrive on the streamer on October 1.

Starring Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment, the movie joins a slew of other titles that will thrill and chill subscribers during the spookiest time of the year.

The Sixth Sense

It’s been more than two decades since M. Night Shyamalan delivered audiences the twist to end all other twists in The Sixth Sense and many would say the director has been chasing the high ever since.

In the movie, Bruce Willis appears as Malcolm Crowe, a child psychologist trying to make amends with a that went horribly wrong by taking on an especially curious patient, Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), who claims he can see and speak with the dead.

Throughout terrifying visions and experiences, audiences ride along with the pair as Cole becomes more and more traumatized, thanks to his encounters with those in the afterlife.

The Sixth Sense Cast

Along with Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment, The Sixth Sense also featured a handful of other titans of the industry including Toni Collette, who received an Academy Award nomination for her work in M. Night Shyamalan’s most beloved movie.

Filling out the ensemble cast is a list of other impressive names including Olivia Williams (The Crown), Mischa Barton (The O.C.), and Donnie Wahlberg (Band of Brothers).

Sixth Sense Among His Best

On Rotten Tomatoes, The Sixth Sense is a Certified Fresh feature, with an 85% approval rating from critics.

The title is the second highest-rated on the website for a project to come from M. Night Shyamalan, with his Jaws-based documentary, The Shark Is Still Working earning the impressive bragging rights of a perfect score.

Beyond those two, Signs, Split, and The Visit are the director’s other most appreciated productions.

Numerous Awards

Not only did Toni Collette receive an Academy Award nomination for her role as Haley Joel Osment’s on-screen mother in The Sixth Sense, but the movie also landed a handful of other nods from the prestigious annual event.

Along with Best Picture, Shyamalan was nominated for Best Director, while Haley Joel Osment celebrated a major step in his young career with a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

The film would go on to receive other accolades from organizations like the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

M. Night Shyamalan’s Career

Following the intense and impressive success of The Sixth Sense, M. Night Shyamalan took a minute to regroup before picking up the camera and getting back to work on his next feature, 2000’s Unbreakable.

In the meantime, the multi-hyphenate creative penned the script for Stuart Little but was back in the filmmaking saddle in no time at all.

Over the next several years, he would bring audiences titles like Signs, The Village, Lady in the Water, and more, with none of them hitting quite as hard as The Sixth Sense.

Possibly part of the problem for M. Night Shyamalan is that he’s known as a director who loves a good twist. Because of that, audiences are always going into his films anticipating something really wild to happen in the third act.

Unfortunately, very few of these twists pack the same punch that The Sixth Sense’s bombshell did.

For those who haven’t seen it, head over to Hulu on October 1 to check out The Sixth Sense and see why M. Night Shyamalan landed his reputation of being the twist master with the iconic film.
