After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, Timo Tjahjanto’s new spy thriller is coming to Netflix in October. The Shadow Strays follows an assassin, Codename 13 after she is suspended for a mission that went awry. An action-packed rescue mission ensues, with 13 learning to listen to her moral compass along the way.

The Shadow Strays begins streaming on Netflix on October 17.

After she is suspended for failing to keep her mission under wraps, a 17-year-old assassin known as Codename 13 finds herself pulled into the life of an 11-year-old boy named Monji who has lost his mother to a criminal syndicate.

When he goes missing, 13 pulls out all the stops to find Monji, setting off an action-packed adventure in The Shadow Strays. The twisty spy thriller challenges 13’s allegiance to her mentor and calls her whole mission into question.

Along with The Shadow Strays, Timo Tjahjanto will direct next year’s Nobody 2.

Writer and director of The Shadow Strays, Timo Tjahjanto is a veteran of the thriller genre, best known for his work on the VHS franchise. Tjahjanto is one half of the filmmaking duo the Mo Brothers along with his longtime collaborator, Kimo Stamboel. The pair are most famous for their work on Killers, which won best score at the Citra awards for its original music.

Tjahjanto is already a popular figure in the Asian film market and has now broken into American markets as well, being tapped for the new Bob Odenkirk film Nobody 2.

The Shadow Strays taps into both martial arts and horror roots, bringing a determined young assassin into sharp conflict with a new sense of conscience.

The spy thriller theme of The Shadow Strays is completely in Tjahjanto’s wheelhouse, and he will continue his contribution to the thriller genre with Nobody 2, a spy thriller about a normal-seeming family man with a big secret. Bringing Tjahjanto’s most recent work to Netflix can give the Indonesian filmmaker a broader audience, inviting new viewers to sample his unique style.

Influenced by the gore and realistic martial arts action movies of the 1980s, both European and Hong Kong scenes, Tjahjanto made a name for himself with disturbing, bloody, and violent horror and thriller movies.

The Shadow Strays taps into both martial arts and horror roots, bringing a determined young assassin into sharp conflict with a new sense of conscience. With a proven ability to create believable demons, Tjahjanto sets his protagonist up for a satisfying struggle against a nefarious group of foes.
