The Purge 6 Is Set In A Nightmare America Based On Today’s Politics
The Purge 6 is set to bring the series into the most polarizing it’s been in years, with American states apparently segregating from the union based on ideology, sexuality, and religion, according to a recent write-up in Collider. The films have always been overtly political, relying on trending topics in the news from each year to influence the latest additions to the franchises growing roster of horrifying purges.
Of course, the latest installment is clearly setting out to be the most overtly polarizing by splitting the United States up into multiple colonies, in a clear reflection of radical talking points from a number of real-life fringe political groups.
Writer-director James DeMonaco wants The Purge 6 to feature a United States broken into seperate countries based on idealogy and identity.
The Purge series has always made deep and powerful social commentary regarding certain political topics such as legislation, gun violence, and the growing polarization of the modern political landscape. With The Purge 6, writer-director James DeMonaco has set out to create his greatest and most thought-provoking experiment yet. During a recent interview, DeMonaco stated that he wishes to bring modern issues in political discourse to life on the screen by placing the absurdity of extremism on full display for all to see.
When pressed about his greatest filmmaking influences for The Purge 6, beyond the increasingly antagonistic political landscape of the past several years, DeMonaco explained that he grew up watching films such as Logan’s Run, Soylent Green, and the works of John Carpenter and George Romero. A hallmark of each of the filmmaker’s influences was their overt use of sociopolitical messaging within their films, without ever garishly standing atop a soapbox to make their point.
The Purge was a run-of-the-mill horror movie that has spawned a wildly successful franchise that’s now a political satire.
These films, like The Purge films, are able to provide a nuanced look into the multiple possible outcomes of extremist politics impacting society at the time of their release. The Purge 6 filmmaker went on to explain that America’s current landscape is as fractured as ever, explaining that his solution to this political landscape within the film is remapping the states based on factors such as race, sexuality, and religion. The multiple states create a number of fringe havens within the film which would make the short-lived Confederacy’s secession attempt look like little more than a minor argument in comparison.
The Purge 6 Takes The Current Political Climate To An Absurd Extreme
Specifically, James DeMonaco called out GOP extremists such as Marjorie Taylor Greene due to recent comments made by the highly controversial state rep, which suggested fracturing the United States on ideological grounds. DeMonaco seemed to implicate a number of politicians in their similar thinking, though he opted not to use any other names specifically. This division deeply saddens the Purge 6 director, as he explained that he grew up in a highly diverse neighborhood in New York, which allowed for blending many cultures, creating a vast learning experience for himself and others.
While the tension in United States politics has certainly grown to a fever pitch in recent years, with social media making voters seem more divided than ever, the scenario posed by The Purge 6 is still a novelty concept. If nothing else, the film will serve as a stark reminder to be civil with one another, and hopefully make us all a bit more open to exploring other cultures and lifestyles to broaden our horizons.
