Despite the confirmed news that Seth MacFarlane is leaving his hit sci-fi series, The Orville, The Orville Season 3 has dropped a new trailer for the final run with the creator. Where once the show had been on Fox, the second season ended in April of 2019, and fans were left wondering when this psuedo Star Trek comedy series would find its way back to television screens. Hulu swung in and picked the series up and has now dropped a trailer for the new season, which is now called The Orville: New Horizons. You can see the epic trailer below:
Quite honestly, this new trailer makes the series seem much more on the adventure and drama side of things, with just small hints of comedy added. Seth MacFarlane returns as Captain Ed Mercer, along with Adrianne Palicki as Commander Kelly Grayson and Scott Grimes as Lt. Gordon Malloy. The fact that The Orville Season 3 is being designated as New Horizons has more than one meaning. Captain Mercer tells the crew that they will be entering unexplored space, and drops an on-par MacFarlane line by ending his rousing speech with, “May the force be with you.” Also, the series has also moved from Fox to Hulu, so that are certainly some new horizons to be explored.
Seth MacFarlane has blended his love of humor and sci-fi love in this series, as there are certainly a ton of Star Trek and even Star Wars references made in the trailer alone. However, it seems that the crew is banding together to explore space together for one final time. MacFarlane is set to leave the series behind, as he is going to focus on the new Ted series, which is based on the films. He will return to voice the character of Ted. He has also given Hulu permission to exit the show and have someone else as the lead.
The Orville Season 3 might excite fans more now that it has moved from a major network to a streaming service. The first season had not been that well-received by critics, but the second saw some much hugely favorable numbers. The series went from a poor 30% rating in season one to a 100% rating for season two on Rotten Tomatoes. That is certainly a huge leap for the show. However, both seasons have an average audience rating of 93%. Audiences love this series, and it seems as if Hulu saw the value in bringing it back. Honestly, The Orville can get away with a lot more adult humor considering it is now on Hulu, versus being on a cable network.
The Orville Season 3 will air on Hulu on June 2nd. The newest season will contain slightly fewer episodes than its predecessors. There will be 11 episodes total, and it could mean that Seth MacFarlane’s character might meet his end at the end. That is just speculation, but based on his humor, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility. Captain Mercer might just die in some awkward and hilarious manner. That might also be if Hulu plans to continue the series without Mercer popping back up in some way.
