The best couple from the hit NBC comedy, The Office reunited at a basketball game this week. Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak, known for their roles as Kelly Kapoor and Ryan Howard, were spotted courtside for the showdown between the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks. The Massachusetts natives were treated to a good one as the Celtics earned a 125 -112 win over their opponents.
But this wasn’t The Office couple’s first appearance at a sporting event in Boston this year. In June, Kaling and Novak teamed up to throw the ceremonial first pitch before a Red Sox – Cincinnati Reds game at Fenway Park. The former co-stars were featured on the team’s official Twitter page, posing in Sox jerseys alongside Wally and Tessie, the Red Sox mascots.
Mindy Kaling and B.J Novak met in 2004 as writers and actors on The Office. They have remained best friends even though the show ended in 2013. Their characters dated on the show, and the on-screen couple also admitted to a brief romantic relationship in real life. Due to how close they are, some fans still wonder if they are still “together” and just not saying.
The actress even touches on their close friendship in her Amazon essay collection, Nothing Like I Imagined (Except for Sometimes). She explains that her bestie from The Office is much more social than she is and knows exactly how to push her buttons. But Novak does it in the absolute best way, as he is mindful of her crippling social anxiety.
Speaking about their relationship in 2012, Novak told Vulture they were “never really dating and never really not dating.” The Office co-stars didn’t know and neither did anyone else. But they would always be together even if they were not getting along. He also said that their series characters dated before they did. And that Kelly and Ryan’s squabbles were inspired by their own arguments.
In an interview with People, Kaling shared Novak’s sentiment about their relationship, calling it “weird as hell.” The actress tried to explain, saying that The Office alum is not her boyfriend, but not her best friend either. She added that the best way to describe their relationship was as a romantically charged camaraderie with loud arguments. “But I don’t think Facebook would accept this as a new status,” she told the outlet.
In the essay “Lonely in LA,” from her new Amazon book of essays, Kaling said that she wanted to form a tight-knit group of girlfriends when she moved to the city in 2005. Women she could watch romantic comedies, shop, and cry with. But instead, she had Novak. “He is my genuine best friend, and actually pretty in touch with his feminine side,” The Office star said via Parade.
She added that while he would never do all the super girly stuff, Novak doesn’t have much social anxiety. And he’d rather die than ride in a white limo. But for some reason, he’s the only person who gets Kaling the most. While their relationship status remains undefined, it’s great that The Office stars found each other.
