The Nun 2 Keeps The Conjuring’s Winning Streak Alive At The Box Office
Now, with an entire decade under its belt, The Conjuring franchise is showing zero signs of slowing down. This weekend saw the latest release in the horror series with the arrival of The Nun 2. According to Slash Film, the sequel to the Corin Hardy-helmed 2018 feature, The Nun, has managed to scare up $32 million during its opening weekend at the box office. This covers its $22 million production cost, proving there’s nothing cursed about this spin-off.
The Nun 2 is on pace to be another success for The Conjuring franchise, estimated to bring in $32 million during its opening weekend, but there’s the chance it goes even higher.
With its big earnings, The Nun 2 has knocked Antoine Fuqua’s latest Denzel Washing collaboration, The Equalizer 3, from its run as the number one winner at the box office. Still making a cash grab seeing good earnings this weekend has been the blockbuster duo Barbie and Oppenheimer as well as Warner Bros. and DC’s Blue Beetle and Sony’s based-on-a-true-story film, Gran Turismo. Next week sees the arrival of Kenneth Branagh’s A Haunting in Venice, which may give The Nun 2 a run for its money.
Directed by Michael Chaves, who has directed previous titles in the franchise, including The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and The Curse of La Llorona, The Nun 2 acts as a sequel to the 2018 film The Nun. Transporting audiences to 1956 France, the film follows the investigation following the gruesome murder of a priest. With Taissa Farmiga back as Sister Irene, the devout Catholic soon discovers that the demonic nun known as Valak has returned for more blood and chaos.
The character of The Nun first appeared in The Conjuring 2, unexpectedly launching an iconic horror role for actress Bonnie Aarons.
Along with Taissa Farmiga reprising her role from the first installment, The Nun 2 also sees Jonas Bloquet and Bonnie Aarons returning to their roles as Maurice and The Nun, respectively. Also included in the lineup this time around are Storm Reid (The Last of Us), Anna Popplewell (The Chronicles of Narnia franchise), Andrew Morgado (Bumblebee), David Horovitch (House of the Dragon), Suzanne Bertish (Hanover Street), and Katelyn Rose Downey. The film also features a post-credit scene that sees the return of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, respectively.
The Conjuring franchise initially kicked off with the 2013 movie of the same name that told the paranormal tale of one family’s struggle with the supernatural in Rhode Island in 1971. Taken from the reports of Ed and Lorraine Warren, two paranormal investigators, the film made for the perfect kick-off in a sprawling, spooky world filled with multiple off-shoots. After making her first appearance in The Conjuring 2, the demonic entity known as The Nun was quickly given the green light on her own movie, eventually spawning The Nun 2.
The Nun 2 stars Taissa Farmiga, the younger sister of The Conjuring series star Vera Farmiga.
As for where The Nun 2 falls in the box office alongside other titles from The Conjuring franchise, it falls in between the opening weekend numbers for the Curse of La Llorona (26.3 million) and Annabelle: Creation ($35 million). With these just being the numbers from its opening weekend, there’s a good chance that The Nun 2 will rocket past several of its sibling titles when it opens in the international market and continues to scare audiences around the world.
