Netflix Makes A Decision About The Night Agent Season 3 Before Season 2 Starts
When Netflix, or really any streamer, has a hit on its hands, there isn’t much question about what will happen with the series. Namely, that bad boy is getting extended and not leaving any doubt where the fans (or talent) are concerned.
Such is the case with Netflix’s The Night Agent which just got some exciting news. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series has been renewed for a third season. And this is before the second has even hit the streamer.
The Night Agent Season 3
The announcement about The Night Agent Season 3 comes a few months before the projected release of Season 2. That’s supposed to come at some point in early 2025, but it is a testament to just how big a hit the show was for its first set of episodes.
The Night Agent is a Netflix original series that premiered in March 2023. It’s based on Matthew Quirk’s bestselling novel of the same name and follows Gabriel Basso’s Peter Sunderland, an FBI Agent working in the bowels of the White House when we first meet him.
A Massive Conspiracy
The job is mundane (he waits for a lone phone to ring if there’s news from compromised spies), and he mostly just sits around.
But he’s quickly pulled into a massive conspiracy (shocker) when he receives a call from tech CEO Rose Larkin whose parents were killed by assassins.
Turns out they were spies themselves (who knew?), and not Rose and Peter are at the center of a terrorist plot and massive government conspiracy.
A Massive Hit For Netflix
The Night Agent Season 2 and Season 3 will have a lot to live up to here, especially on the metrics front.
The first season was a massive hit for Netflix, and through its first 25 days on the platform, it ranked as the streamer’s sixth-most viewed debut series. It easily won the slot when it first appeared, vaulting to the top of Netflix rankings during its first couple of months.
A Critical Hit As Well
On the critical front, The Night Agent Season 3 will also have to do work as well. Reviews were more than favorable for the first run of episodes, hitting 74 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics were fans of the pacing and thought Basso carried the somewhat-doe-eyed Agent turned hero angle well.
The Night Agent Season 2
Apparently, The Night Agent Season 2 will see Peter Sunderland elevate to an actual Night Agent himself, and presumably get caught in a new set of increasingly dangerous circumstances.
Shawn Ryan is on as creator and showrunner, having been down the path with these kinds of series before. He helmed or worked on shows like The Shield, The Unit, and S.W.A.T. in the past. The Night Agent may very well end up his biggest series yet.
Long-Term Commitments
With The Night Agent Season 3 confirmed from Netflix, it further proves the streamer will make long-term commitments to series fans get on board with early. Everything else? Well, we will always be holding our breath. Such is the nature of the television streaming landscape. You just never know.
