Angry Birds Killed The Best Ryan Gosling Sequel Happening
As it turns out, Barbenheimer isn’t the only double feature that Ryan Gosling has been a part of– his previous work, The Nice Guys, also had its box office rivalry with none other than The Angry Birds Movie. Despite being a relative success at the box office, the fact that it finished its theatrical run behind The Angry Birds Movie sealed its fate in terms of getting a sequel—at least according to Gosling.
The Nice Guys
The Nice Guys remains one of Gosling’s best projects. The dark comedy starring Gosling and Russell Crowe as hilariously mismatched private detectives who end up working on a missing persons case together has been favored by the movie fans ever since the film dropped in 2016. However, according Gosling, the idea for the sequel was scrapped because the success of The Angry Birds Movie blew away The Nice Guys.
The Nice Guys Didn’t Make Enough Money
For comparison, The Nice Guys made $62.8 million at the box office against a $50 million production budget, while The Angry Birds Movie made $352.3 million against a $73 million production budget. For Warner Bros., The Nice Guys‘ ticket sales weren’t enough to warrant the sequel, despite the movie holding a Certified Fresh rating of 91 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a 79 percent audience score.
The Film Is Better Known Now
These metrics alone should nudge Warner Bros into producing a sequel for The Nice Guys, as it would probably make significantly more money now that the people know what’s the story about. This underscores just how difficult it is to get a non-franchised project off the ground these days, which is sad because the film is a really good cop buddy movie that’s exceptionally easy to turn into a franchise. Theoretically, the now-iconic cop duo could just keep investigating different mysteries together.
The Foundation For The Nice Guys 2 Is There
This is particularly true because the ending of The Nice Guys left room for a potential sequel, and despite being overshadowed by The Angry Birds Movie—which did get its own sequel, by the way—has gained more recognition and interest over time. It’s really not surprising, considering that it basically revolves around a conspiracy involving kidnapping, scandalous adult entertainment movies, and government cover-ups, all set in the 1970s.
Emily Blunt Wants In On A Sequel
What’s even more interesting about the whole idea is that actress Emily Blunt, who co-stars with Ryan Gosling in their recent Fall Guy movie, supports the idea of The Nice Guys sequel and has since expressed the desire to appear in it, if it ever came to be.
Make A Sequel, And Be Smarter About It
The company should also consider releasing the movie in a clearer release window this time and avoid setting it up against major releases—The Nice Guys was also trailing behind the Captain America: Civil War release. However, given how popular the movie has become since its release, they can release it anytime and expect a profit.
