The Masked Singer apparently had some controversy earlier in the week when one of the contestants revealed their true identity and some judges weren’t fans of it at all. While the show is purposefully clouded in mystery around who is underneath the costumes while they are singing, the reveals tend to just be all in good fun. But not this time. According to Deadline, when Rudy Giuliani revealed his face for the crowd and judges, Robin Thicke and Ken Jeong, half of the panel, walked off the set in protest. It seems they didn’t want any part in helping to promote Giuliani in this sense.
Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke didn’t seem to explain their reasoning for walking off of The Masked Singer set, though it doesn’t take much of a guess to figure out why. Rudy Giuliani was one of the central figures during the last Presidential cycle in late 2020 and early 2021 when he aided former President Donald Trump in having the election results called into question. The former mayor of New York City was retained as legal counsel for Trump in the fight to have the election results overturned. Obviously, that didn’t end up coming to pass, but Giuliani became synonymous with the effort. Things seemed to culminate for him on that front when he had a press conference outside the landscaping company The Four Seasons in what appeared to be a mistake in location booking.
Nevertheless, The Masked Singer has made its bones on bringing up surprising guests to take part as contestants in an effort to make it more difficult to figure out just who is underneath all of the costumes. In this sense, a guy like Rudy Giuliani is an interesting choice because while he’s persona non grata in a number of different political circles (maybe Trump’s included), he is recognizable as a celebrity at this point. There was a time when his reaction, response, and leadership made him one of the most popular politicians out there following the events of 9/11 in New York City. Those days would seem to be long behind him at this point though.
Apparently, The Masked Singer judges Robin Thicke and Ken Jeong ultimately returned to the stage to join the others, Jenny McCarthy and Nicole Sherzinger, for the rest of the taping. The episode in question is supposedly meant to air sometime next month. Based on this round of news, it could be one of the more popular airings considering what a polarizing (at best) figure Rudy Giuliani is these days. And there’s some chance that when it airs Thicke and Jeong will offer some sort of explanation for why they walked out. It doesn’t appear that they came back until Giuliani had left though it’s being reported that McCarthy and Scherzinger did speak with the guy.
Past winners of The Masked Singer include T-Pain, Wayne Brady, Kandi Burress, LeAnne Rhimes, Nick Lachey, and Jewel. The show is currently in its sixth season and has been one of Fox’s top performers in the ratings over the years thanks to its star power and interesting concept. Let’s see how this Rudy Giuliani episode plays out next month.
