The Marvels Needs To Give Us These Surprise Appearances

By Douglas Helm | Updated

It won’t be long until The Marvels, the MCU’s next big blockbuster, hits theaters. While the MCU’s previous effort, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, was mostly a standalone story, Brie Larson’s upcoming sequel looks like it will be more integrated into the grander MCU tapestry. With that in mind, fans are hoping there are at least one or two surprise character appearances in store — and these are the ones we think should happen.

Silver Surfer

More than most MCU characters, Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, spends a lot of time in space. While the Guardians of the Galaxy movies almost exclusively take place off the planet, there is a whole MCU galaxy out there of characters to explore. Therefore, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine a scenario where Carol Danvers crosses paths with the Silver Surfer.

Marvel fans have long waited for the Silver Surfer to enter the MCU, especially because his presence typically foreshadows the introduction of a much more fearsome character, which we’ll touch on next. With rumors that the Silver Surfer is set to be introduced in his own special or in the upcoming Fantastic Four film, The Marvels would be a great place to briefly introduce him. It could even just be a post-credits scene to set up the ominous, world-ending threat that would be the next entry on the list.

Galactus

Remember, at the end of The Avengers, when Loki, who was able to pose a threat to the entire team, bowed before a much scarier threat? Thanos’ introduction to the MCU was the perfect way to set him up as a villain that would push Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to their absolute limit. And while Kang is the current big bad of the universe, The Marvels certainly wouldn’t be too early in the MCU’s timeline to pull a similar stunt.

The Avengers came out way back in 2012, and Thanos didn’t get his big spotlight until Avengers: Infinity War six years later. It would be perfectly reasonable to see a post-credits scene in The Marvels with the Silver Surfer and Galactus mirroring the post-credits scene with Loki and Thanos. That would give Kang plenty of time to shine before Galactus took over as the next threat that the Avengers had to face.

The Eternals

While Silver Surfer and Galactus would be great surprise appearances for a post-credits scene, it would be nice to see some previously introduced characters make a return in The Marvels as well. Specifically, the neglected Eternals team, who seemingly came and went as far as the rest of the MCU is concerned. Despite there being a massive dead space god sticking out of the ocean in the MCU, the Eternals and that event have hardly been mentioned.

The end of Eternals saw several members whisked away by Arishem, but Thena, Makkari, Druig, and Harry Styles’ Eros, aka Starfox, are still out in space somewhere. There could certainly be a scenario where the main trio of The Marvels runs into these rogue Eternals. It would give us a chance to touch base with the team and get a more extended introduction to Styles’ Starfox.

Nova

Marvel Nova

We were introduced to the Nova Corps in Guardians of the Galaxy and then learned of their destruction at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. The fact that we didn’t really get a chance to see the destruction of the Nova Corps means there are undoubtedly some surviving members, which means one of them could grant the Nova Force to Sam Alexander or Richard Rider, the two characters who have been granted the powers in the comics.

The Marvels is introducing Zawe Ashton as the villain, and her character is reportedly a Kree revolutionary. While the Nova Corps may have previously helped keep the Kree in check before their destruction, it seems the onus will fall on Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau to take them down. However, it wouldn’t hurt if they had some help from Nova, who is long overdue for his MCU introduction.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Another group that has experience dealing with Kree would be the Guardians of the Galaxy, who have a brand new shiny lineup thanks to the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. We briefly got to see the new team in action at the end of that film, but it would certainly be cool to see them pop up again so soon. Especially because of all the hilarious character interactions that would undoubtedly come from them meeting the main trio of The Marvels.

Depending on how powerful the villains are in the movie, having the new lineup of Rocket Raccoon, Cosmo, Kraglin, Groot, Adam Warlock, and Phyla fighting for the good guys might be the edge they need. The comedic value alone is enough to want these guys in the movie. But if the Marvels are going up against an army of powerful Kree, they might also be necessary.

Jessica Jones

Krysten Ritter

Finally, we have the character that has been rumored to pop up in the MCU ever since Charlie Cox’s Daredevil appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin popped up in Hawkeye. Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones was a fan-favorite character from Marvel’s Netflix shows, and if the MCU was going to bring these characters back into the fold, Jones seems like the best one to reintroduce next. Especially because her detective skills could come in handy in The Marvels.

Jessica Jones is also a formidable fighter, so combining that with her detective skills would make her a good ally for the Marvels to have on their side. Sure, The Marvels might not be the most logical place to introduce a more grounded hero like Jones, but the juxtaposition between what she faced in the Netflix shows with the aliens she’d be helping fight in this film would be interesting to see. In any case, they should definitely try to bring Jessica Jones back as soon as possible, and since her best friend in the comics is Carol Danvers, it would make sense for at least a brief cameo in a movie featuring Brie Larson’s Danvers.
