The Marvels Director Explains How It Will Avoid Superhero Fatigue
The Marvels director Nia DaCosta says “superhero fatigue absolutely exists” and believes her upcoming film will avoid it by incorporating elements not seen in other franchise properties. “The biggest difference from the other MCU movies to date is that it’s really wacky and silly,” DaCosta said via The Hollywood Reporter.
The biggest difference from the other MCU movies to date is that it’s really wacky and silly. The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds, unlike others you’ve seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven’t seen before.

“The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds, unlike others you’ve seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven’t seen before,” DaCosta continued. Unlike previous Marvel team-ups, in which Earth’s Mightiest Heroes fend off a fearsome threat, executive producer Mary Livanos says The Marvels delivers a more targeted experience.
The Avengers movies are these epic conclusions to chapters of storytelling, whereas this is a team-up within the narrative that we didn’t necessarily expect for Marvel,” Livanos added. “Usually, you wait for characters to show up all together in Avengers movies. We were excited to design a team-up featuring characters that women from all walks of life could relate to.”
Livanos also revealed that The Marvels will have ties to other MCU movies such as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. The link is Ms. Marvel’s bangle, which, combined with some other form of power, can create a hole in space that leads to somewhere else. It will serve as a big part of The Multiverse Saga.
Fans can also look forward to learning more about the adorable Flerken Goose and how the creature is able to swallow gigantic objects. DaCosta noted that fans will see more of the pocket dimension. However, she did not disclose any specifics.

While filming The Marvels, DaCosta and Iman Vellani (who portrays Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel in the film) had several conversations about the broader MCU. The pair even “bristled” over how the film franchise manages incursions. The director said she found the on-screen explanation in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness “very stressful.”
An incursion in the MCU is described as something that happens when the boundary between two universes erodes, causing them to collide and destroy each other. This phenomenon was experienced by Doctor Strange when he visited a reality that had all but disappeared. In Jonathan Hickman’s New Avengers comics, incursions are caused when the Beyonders try to eliminate Molecule Man.
The resulting outcomes mirror those in the MCU, where the demise of Molecule Man (a character replicated across all realities) leads to the collision of two Earths, culminating in the destruction of either one or potentially both. It’s unclear if The Marvels will include any multiverse shenanigans in its already complex storyline.
Iman Vellani, a devoted fan of the MCU and the comic books, has even corrected Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige for a major faux pas in Multiverse of Madness. “Every time I talk to Kevin, we have this argument where I say, ‘The MCU is not 616,'” Vellani told d Elite Daily. “He’s like, ‘It is because I said so.’ I’m like, ‘No, it’s 199999.’ He hates it.”
The Marvels see Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) team up for the first time. The story begins when Carol Danvers, having reclaimed her identity from the Kree, finds herself facing unforeseen consequences which force her to bear the weight of a destabilized universe.

When Danvers’ responsibilities lead her to a wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with those of Kamala Khan, a devoted super-fan from Jersey City, and Carol’s estranged niece, a S.A.B.E.R. astronaut named Captain Monica Rambeau. To find a solution, the trio teams up to save the universe as The Marvels.
The Marvels, which also features Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, is set for release on November 10 despite the ongoing strikes by the Writers Guild of America and The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists delaying several other upcoming projects.
