The Last Of Us Season 2 Is Making Huge Changes From The Games?
The Last of Us season 2 will make changes from the game, in line with what happened with the story for the first season.
After an incredible journey in the first season of HBO’s The Last Of Us, which masterfully adapted the events of the 2013 Playstation game of the same name, showrunner Craig Mazin has announced big plans for the show’s second season. According to a source at ComicBook.com, Mazin has stated The Last Of Us season 2 will stray from the source material in a number of ways, not directly adapting the second game scene by scene as viewers may have come to expect.
Of course, after seeing some of the incredible changes and updates made for the show, such as the elongated romance between tertiary characters such as Bill and Frank in the third episode, fans can rest assured that the changes will be handled with grace.
Mazin reiterated that the broad strokes of the show’s second season will still adapt the overarching events of The Last Of Us Part II, which arrived for the Playstation 4 in 2020. But it will also stray in a number of notable ways. One major change lies in the pacing of the series, as the second game will surely take multiple seasons to adapt. Given the increased length of The Last Of Us Part II‘s story, season 2 of the HBO series will only be able to handle a fraction of the game at once.
Craig Mazin and Naughty Dog Co-President Neil Druckmann began The Last Of Us series with an understanding that changes would only be made when it improved the story. Notable changes throughout the first season include shifting the year that the cordyceps fungal apocalypse began from 2013 to 2003, expanding the relationships of characters within the games’ expansive world, and toning down the presence of infected to reinforce the growing threat of human bandits across the United States.
Mazin states that in The Last Of Us season 2, we can expect the same variety of changes to develop, with calculated efforts to make the series unique from the original games.
While the details of The Last Of Us season 2 have been kept incredibly quiet, fans can have some idea of the direction the second season will take based on the events of the second game. In the sequel, Ellie finds herself traveling far and wide to enact revenge upon a team of Seattle-based raiders led by a muscular woman named Abby. The game takes place over the course of several days, wherein the player experiences both timelines from the perspectives of Ellie and Abby, in order to understand the humanity of each character, and the toll that revenge takes on them.
After taking over half a decade to produce, The Last Of Us Part II was widely hailed as a masterpiece, though it drew controversy for its bold themes and representation of a number of marginalized communities, prominently featuring a transgender character named Lev.
Many of the voice actors from the series were featured in cameo appearances in the show’s first season, leaving fans to wonder what Craig Mazin has in store for the casting of The Last Of Us in season 2.
