Fans have been long awaiting an on-screen adaptation of Naughty Dog’s hit game, The Last of Us. And while 2021 brought confirmation that a series was in the works, much of the upcoming renditions’ details have been under wraps. It has already been confirmed that the series will feature an impressive celebrity lineup helmed by The Mandalorian’s own Pedro Pascal. Now, fans of the sitcom Park and Recreation can rejoice, as the beloved Nick Offerman is rumored to be joining the ensemble cast.
While there is no confirmation that Nick Offerman will have a role in HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, one of the show’s cast members slipped a detail that caught fans’ attention. Murray Bartlett recently spoke with The Guardian to discuss his experience playing Frank in the upcoming series. Seemingly unintentionally, the Game of Thrones star let it slip that Nick Offerman would have a role on the show, as he mentioned sharing scenes with the offbeat masculine celebrity. In the interview, Bartlett said the following: “We filmed it in Calgary. A lot of my scenes are with Nick Offerman,” Bartlett said. “Playing off him was awesome.”
The unintentional news has led the Twitterverse to speculate over what Offerman’s role in the series may be. It has already been announced that the series will be adding in additional new characters never seen in the games, and for all we know, Offerman’s role could be one of those. But that hasn’t stopped the Twitterverse from speculating over possible characters from The Last of Us that Offerman could play. Noting that Murray Bartlett was cast as Frank, an ex-partner of Joel’s longtime friend Bill, fans began surmising possible characters the Parks and Rec actor could possibly portray. Although Frank’s counterpart, Bill, has already been cast with Con O’Neill, that hasn’t stopped fans from wishfully predicting that Offerman will portray the trap-making guru in some form or another. Others have pointed out that recasting is always an option, and are hopeful that the studio has possibly replaced Con O’Neill with a more recognizable celebrity face.
While news remains to pour in on HBO’s first video game adaptation, here’s everything we know so far on the upcoming series. First announced by HBO in March 2020, The Last of Us began filming in Calgary, Alberta in what is known as the country’s largest television production to date in July of 2021 with an expected wrap-up date of June 2022. The project comes as a joint production from Sony, PlayStation Productions, Naughty Dog, The Mighty Mint, and Word Games. The ensemble cast features Pedro Pascal as the first game’s leading character, Joel. Joining Pascal, the studio announced that the young breakthrough Game of Thrones child Head of House actress Bella Ramsay would play the young Ellie, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D actor Gabriel Luna as Joel’s younger brother, Tommy.
The first season will be broken into ten episodes written by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann and will likely follow Joel and Ellie as they travel across the post-apocalyptic United States. With no confirmed release date, it’s likely we won’t see The Last of Us air until at least the second half of 2022, but hopefully, we will get more insight soon on just what Nick Offerman’s role in the show will be.
