HBO’s The Last Of Us Has Already Beaten Game Of Thrones
The Last of Us has a $100 million budget, beating out the production cost of the first five seasons of Game of Thrones.
The Last of Us is the newest video game adaptation that has made its home on HBO. The trailers for this new series paint an identical picture between the video game and the live-action show. However, this new adaptation has already beaten out HBO juggernaut Game of Thrones, as the first season of the new series has a higher budget than the first five seasons of Game of Thrones, as it has cost “upwards of $100 million to make.”
That massive budget could mean that The Last of Us has put a lot of time, effort, and money into ensuring that the series is as identical to the video game as possible. The series has already cast one of the biggest stars in pop culture, Pedro Pascal, who could have asked for a lot of money to star in this new adaptation. Regardless, the CGI from the trailers shows one of the infected enemies known as a Clicker, and looks like it might have cost the studio quite a bit.
The massive budget could also mean that The Last of Us might be throwing a lot of money at a series that could end up failing. We do not believe that will be the case, but with the current issues happening with Warner Bros. Discovery, we are still worried that this adaptation could be one of the shows cut in the future. CEO David Zaslav did have to cut around $3 billion from the company’s budget and having a shot cost $100 million could mean it will be on the chopping block if the reviews aren’t immediately amazing.
The good news is that Neil Druckmann is the co-writer and co-producer of The Last of Us series. Druckmann is the creator of The Last of Us video game and is the current co-president of Naughty Dog studios. Druckmann being on board means that the series is not going to be far different from the video game that was released in 2013.
The Last of Us has a massive number of fans that are wanting to see this new adaptation, so it stands to reason that HBO is not going to be upset at the sheer number of people viewing the series when it finally drops. However, it all depends on the reviews that are given along with streaming numbers to keep this new series afloat. Again, costing $100 million for one season is something that WBD might not be too thrilled about.
For now, we are all going to see what $100 million gets you when The Last of Us is officially released on HBO and HBO Max on January 15, 2023. The new series follows an apocalyptic landscape that sees Joel (Pedro Pascal) come into contact with a girl named Ellie, who is seemingly unphased by the virus that turns human beings into vile zombie-like creatures. Joel must then take Ellie across the country and deliver her to a group of people that will determine to decide what to do with her gift of being invulnerable to this rampant disease.
