The Goonies 2 Is Finally Happening With The Best Possible Cast
According to The Sun, The Goonies 2 is on the way and is bringing back as many original cast members as possible for the sequel to the beloved 1980s classic. A source told the outlet, “The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time, but it’s finally been given the green light to go ahead,” adding that the possible release date for the film could be as soon as 2026 or 2027. There aren’t any details about what the film would be about, but the source said, “the possibilities of where to take the sequel are endless,” and that the team working on the reboot would start developing ideas next summer.
The Goonies
The Goonies starred a very young cast that included Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Ke Huy Quan, John Matuszak, Kerri Green, and Martha Plimpton, and it would be more than possible for most of them to return for The Goonies 2.
Of course, many of those names have gone on to become big-name stars, while others have moved on to quieter careers. Everyone knows Brolin for his many starring and supporting roles in major productions, while Sean Astin became a household name thanks to his turn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Where They Are Now
Ke Huy Quan had a recent major career resurgence, winning an Oscar for his performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once and joining the MCU in the recent season of Loki. Jeff Cohen is now an entertainment lawyer, so he might not come back for The Goonies 2, while former NFL star John Matuszak has since passed away.
Kerri Green and Martha Plimpton both continued acting, and Corey Feldman has taken on a music career, so they’re all primed for a return for a reboot too.
The Goon Docks
Richard Donner, the director of the first film, has also since passed away so they’d need to find someone new to take on the position for The Goonies 2. The first film was based on a story by Steven Spielberg with a script by Chris Colombus that follows a group of kids who lived in an area of Oregon known as the “Goon Docks.”
When their homes are in danger of being foreclosed, they find an old pirate treasure map that leads them on an adventure to find the treasure of the pirate One-Eyed Willy.
Spielberg?
The original film was produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, so Spielberg would presumably be involved in The Goonies 2 in some capacity. The original was a massive hit and has since become a classic, even being selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. With the recent success of other reboots from the 1980s, it’s not surprising that this film is finally getting the green light.
Let’s Hope It Happens
This is far from the first time the possibility of The Goonies 2 has been in the news, as there have been various confirmations and denials from cast and crew members since the early 2000s. Donner himself said a sequel was on the way in 2014, but that obviously didn’t pan out. Hopefully, this new announcement is the real deal and we’ll finally get that long-awaited sequel sooner than later.
