Netflix Gets The Most Infamous Superhero Sci-Fi Blockbuster Of The Decade
Netflix has become the go-to platform for many exciting releases, but it also shelters the outcasts. After hosting 50 Shades of Grey—which was a critical flop—Netflix received the DC summer dud, Ezra Miller’s The Flash.
Netflix Helps Revive Flops
The Flash, both the 2023 movie and the comic book character, don’t really need an introduction. The former primarily doesn’t because it was the most infamous of all flops made by Warner Bros.
Netflix, on the other hand, has proven to be a rather reliable streaming platform for underperformers to find new audiences, including movies such as Matt Damon’s The Great Wall, Jenna Ortega’s Miller’s Girl, and now, Ezra Miller’s The Flash, which was a major disappointment for everyone involved in making and watching the movie.
More Multiverse Stuff
The Flash follows Barry Allen as he tests the limits of his speed force capabilities by going back in time to right wrongs, including the murder of his mother, which would exonerate his father, who was wrongfully accused and convicted of the crime.
But what makes this movie interesting is the fact that it also features a whole range of multiverse variants of DC superheroes, including Michael Keaton’s Caped Crusader, General Zod, Supergirl, and both Henry Cavill and Christopher Reeve versions of Superman.
Ezra Miller’s Baggage
The public sentiment towards the movie declined for various reasons, including controversies associated with its star that have surfaced since the film’s release—those include accusations of assault, burglary, disorderly conduct, harassment, and grooming of minors. On top of all that, it was the final film on the sinking ship, the DCEU, which didn’t help its earnings at the box office, considering the fan disappointment in the franchise.
A Huge Flop
The Flash was released in June 2023, earning $108.167 million domestically and $158.382 million internationally, with a total of just over $266 million. But what sounds like a nice sum is actually a major disappointment for Warner Bros.
Sure, the movie did earn more than its production budget, but it fell short when you factor in the marketing costs and other expenses, which bring the overall costs to $400-450 million, which The Flash had to earn to break even. And it didn’t.
Stream It Now
Regardless of where you stand when it comes to The Flash, even poor-performing movies shouldn’t be forgotten, if for nothing else than due to the talent and effort invested in their making. And Netflix does a really good job of bringing these movies back to the forefront, even for a little while.
Sure, it’s far from any serious media preservation effort, considering that the streamer also removes content from its platform, but it does help maintain some semblance of relevance. It’s not uncommon for these flops to reach the top 10 most-watched lists on Netflix, either.
Those interested in watching Ezra Miller’s The Flash can watch the movie on Netflix. It just recently dropped on the platform, so it’s not outside the realm of possibilities that it reaches the Most Watched list in the coming days before it fades into oblivion once again.
