The Disney+ Sci-Fi Action Thriller That Changed An Entire Franchise
When The Matrix was released in 1999, followed by two sequels (both released in 2003) The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, the world of film was changed forever. A groundbreaking trilogy, it set a new standard for sci-fi action from then on.
Fast forward to 18 years later, and The Matrix Resurrections was released. Resurrections was a breath of fresh air for the franchise, as the two prior sequels fell flat with audiences. Now available for streaming in the Hulu section of Disney+, The Matrix Resurrections was the most romantic of the Matrix saga.
Neo And Trinity Back In The Matrix
The plot of the movie is set many years later after Neo’s original sacrifice led to freedom for many of the humans trapped in the Matrix. In The Matrix Resurrections, Neo is currently lost in the Matrix once again, alongside Trinity, but neither of them remembers that they know each other well.
Neo is a video game designer working on developing a new game based on the faint memories of his life as Neo. He runs into Trinity every day at a local coffee shop, and he even based one of the characters in his game on her … but they don’t have any connection in their Matrix life.
Neo even goes to a shrink regularly in The Matrix Resurrections, and the therapist prescribes him a regimen of blue pills to help keep his mind from wandering and pondering upon the flashbacks he experiences.
The New Morpheus Frees Neo
Meanwhile, a new character named Bugs is working on finding a way to once again free Neo from the Matrix. When Bugs and a recreation of Morpheus (Yahya Abdul-Marteen) successfully pull Neo from the Matrix once more, he wakes up in his pod and finds that Trinity is hooked into the Matrix in a pod right next to him.
Jonathan Groff As Agent Smith
The Matrix Resurrections also features the return of the arch nemesis of Neo, Agent Smith (Jonathan Groff). Agent Smith has an awakening of his own within the Matrix and, of course, causes problems for Neo and Trinity along the way.
What Sets Resurrections Apart From The Other Sequels
The beauty of this story is that Neo is finally fighting for a cause that benefits him. In the first three movies, he puts his life on the line over and over again for the betterment of humanity and the human race as a whole. In The Matrix Resurrections, Neo’s sacrifices are for his own happiness, and isn’t it about time he does something for himself? The revival of the franchise was more successful than the 2003 releases of The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. Though the brief release window kept Keanu Reeves looking young and fit for filming, filming and releasing the two movies back to back didn’t fare well for the audience reception of the installments.
Stream The Matrix Resurrections In The Hulu Section Of Disney+
Giving the franchise nearly 20 years to cool off proved to be a good move for writer and director Lana Wachowski. Though there was plenty of conflict around the simultaneous streaming and theater release of the movie, the movie does maintain a 63 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. If you’d like to formulate your own opinion on the matter, you can get a little refresher or see The Matrix Resurrections for the first time streaming on Disney+ with the new beta version of the Hulu add-on to the channel.
