The Must-See Superhero Epic Of The 90s Is Returning To Theaters
The remake of The Crow, starring Bill Skarsgård, is just a few months away from release, with the IP’s fanbase split down the middle. A part of the fandom welcomes the remake, stating that it has long been overdue, while others believe it tarnishes the memory of Brandon Lee, who tragically died on the original set. But both sides will be happy to know that the original The Crow is now returning to theaters for a limited run.
The Crow
The Crow was directed by Alex Proyas, and based on the 1989 comic book series of the same name by James O’Barr. It follows a musician, Eric Draven—portrayed by the late Brandon Lee—who, along with his fiancée, gets brutally murdered a night before their wedding.
On the anniversary of their death, however, Eric rises from the grave thanks to a mysterious crow and assumes the mantle of a supernatural avenger. He then goes on a vengeance killing spree and eventually confronts the gangster responsible for his and his fiancé’s death.
A Box Office Hit
The movie was a massive success upon release, and besides a great response from the critics and reasonable commercial success, it quickly became a cult classic among the audiences. It’s particularly favored among the goth subculture, who often treat it as a cinematic Bible of sorts due to its aesthetic and counterculture appeal and emotional resonance. It went on to make $94 million against a $23 million production budget, though it’s entirely possible that the death of Brandon Lee made the movie more popular than it would otherwise have been.
Brandon Lee’s Tragic Death
For those who aren’t aware, Lee was fatally wounded during filming as a result of a firearm and later succumbed to his wounds, contributing to the mythos that The Crow is one of Hollywood’s cursed movies. The film was finished without Lee through script rewrites, stunt doubles, and digital production technologies. It also spawned a handful of sequels, but none were actually as successful as the original movie—quite the contrary, each subsequent release was objectively worse than its predecessor.
The Remake
Many fans believe that the original The Crow is Brandon Lee’s legacy and that making a remake somehow tarnishes the memory of the actor, but regardless of how much some fans might disagree with it, the original movie definitely deserved a remake. Numerous attempts to reboot the franchise have been made over the years, but none of them were particularly successful. Even Bill Skarsgård‘s version, the one pending release, has lingered in development hell since 2008 until the work picked up again in 2020.
Theatrical Re-Release
So, while the fans are waiting for Bill Skarsgård’s reboot of The Crow—to undoubtedly pass their judgment on the new release—they can also catch the screening of the original movie, which is coming to theaters for a limited 2-day run, as part of its 30th anniversary. The Crow will be in theatres on May 29 and 30, while the Skarsgård-led reboot of the iconic movie arrives in theatres on August 23.
