The Crow Reboot Takes A Huge Step Forward After Years Of Delay
The Crow reboot is finally moving forward after seemingly endless delay, with a studio finally locked down for filming.
The Crow reboot has been in development hell for quite a long time, but there have been various meaningful announcements that bode well for the reimagining of the cult classic. The most recent step forward comes in the form of the new Penzing Studios, which will be where The Crow reboot will do all of its virtual production filming. Penzing Studios is a former air force base outside of Munich that was transformed into a backlot. The Crow reboot will also be doing location shoots in Munich and Prague, with the majority of the digital asset creation and VFX work being done in Bavaria.
The Crow reboot also has its star in the form of Bill Skarsgard as Eric Draven. Skarsgard, known for playing Pennywise the Clown in It, will be playing the role that Brandon Lee made famous in the 1994 original. Tragically, Lee was accidentally killed on the set of The Crow due to a prop gun mishap. Along with Skarsgard, Danny Huston and musician FKA Twigs have both been cast in the reboot as well. The new film will follow the same plot as the original, with a man named Eric Draven being brutally murdered and being brought back to life to seek revenge. The new film will be directed by Rupert Sanders with a screenplay by Zach Baylin. Previous versions of the script were written by Kevin Cornish and Cliff Dorfman. The film is based on the original graphic novel by James O’Barr.
Before The Crow reboot came to fruition, there were several sequels made following the first movie. The Crow: City of Angels, The Crow: Salvation, and The Crow: Wicked Prayer all starred different actors in the lead role. None of them had the same critical and commercial success as the 1994 film. Hopefully, this reboot will be more of a faithful return to form for fans of The Crow.
Before Rupert Sanders was attached to direct and Bill Skarsgard was attached to star in The Crow reboot, the studios went through many different possible directors and actors trying to bring the film to the screen. Stephen Norrington, F. Javier Gutiérrez, and Corin Hardy were all attached to direct at some point, though they all fell through. Actors who were attached included Chris Evans and Jason Momoa, though neither stuck to the project. Fortunately, it seems like all of the pieces are now in place for The Crow reboot to come together.
There is no current release date planned for The Crow reboot, so it would definitely be worthwhile to check out the original 1994 movie in the meantime. The film is a cult classic for a reason and stars the late Brandon Lee alongside Michael Wincott, Rochelle Davis, Ernie Hudson, Bai Ling, Sofia Shinas, Anna Thomson, David Patrick Kelly, Angel David, Tony Todd, and more. Alex Proyas directed the film with a script by David J. Schow and John Shirley. It currently has an 84% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 90% from audiences.
