The Crow reboot feature film has been gaining momentum in recent times, having gone through several weeks of filming in the Czech Republic. Now, director Rupert Sanders has recruited a Marvel star to its cast. The Hollywood Reporter writes that veteran actor Danny Huston has joined The Crow Reboot in an as-yet undisclosed role. Marvel fans will know Huston best for his performance as Colonel William Stryker in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
The Crow reboot is a new feature based on a 1994 film of the same name directed by Alex Proyas (Dark City), which itself was based on a late 80s comic book written and drawn by James O’Barr. The story follows a young man and his fiancee who are killed by a gang after their car breaks down. The man is resurrected by a crow and sets about exacting revenge upon those who killed him and his fiancee. The 1994 film starred Brandon Lee (son of martial arts legend Bruce) in the lead role, who was tragically killed after an on-set gun accident. Lee’s performance helped contribute to a strong critical reception of the original film, which boasts an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film spawned a string of unsuccessful sequels. For the new reboot, Danny Huston joins a cast that includes FKA Twigs and Bill Skarsgård in the lead role of Eric Draven. The trio will be working off a script penned by Zach Baylin (King Richard, Creed III).
Before being cast in The Crow reboot, Danny Huston is of course well known for his role as the antagonist Stryker in the aforementioned X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Huston also had a large and villainous role to play as Ludendorff in 2017’s Wonder Woman. The actor has also had important roles on the small screen, appearing in 19 episodes of the acclaimed Western drama Yellowstone and 10 episodes of American Horror Story: Coven, receiving a Saturn Award nomination for his guest performance in the latter. Huston has also appeared in the films of some of Hollywood’s greatest directors, such as Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator, Alfonso Cuaron’s Children of Men, and Alejandro Inarritu’s 21 Grams. Huston has also got a handful of directing credits on his C.V., with the most recent being the 2017 film, The Last Photograph, in which he also starred in the lead role of Tom Hammond, a man thrust into a whirlwind of events following the theft of his most-treasured photograph of him and his son.
Little else is known about The Crow reboot as it stands, other than the few cast members that have been announced, namely Danny Huston and FKA Twigs, and Bill Skarsgård before him. However, with filming well underway, more announcements are to be expected, such as further castings and a proposed release date, which is expected to come sometime next year. Given that many previous attempts to reboot the film have failed in the past (including one set to star Jason Momoa), hopefully, this reboot can live up to the 1994 Brandon Lee-starring original.
