The Crow Director Slams Reboot Flop With Awful Rotten Tomatoes Score
From the moment the first trailer released for The Crow reboot movie, fans had already had many criticisms about it and were expecting the worst. Having only pulled in about $10 million in its first week in the box office, and a 23 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, those expectations certainly turned out to be warranted. However, even the director of the original movie, Alex Proyas, is slamming the movie and calling the failure of the reboot deserved.
Alex Proyas
The original 1994 The Crow infamously resulted in the tragic death of rising actor Brandon Lee. Evidently Alex Proyas’s main point of contention with The Crow reboot is that he feels it disrespects the memory of Lee by essentially trying to replace his most iconic film.
Proyas made it crystal clear he feels the movie should have been left alone and there is no replacing Lee as The Crow.
Sharing his thoughts about The Crow reboot months ago, Proyas said, “The Crow is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. That’s how it should remain.”
A Cash Grab
There are no doubt many fans who also feel that way. However, there would certainly have been others who would have been eager to praise The Crow reboot if it had simply felt like it was made with passion.
But many on Rotten Tomatoes feel the movie was a mere attempt to cash in on the name value of the original. Proyas shared that belief.
“I thought the remake was a cynical cash-grab,” Proyas said in response to The Crow remake’s abysmal opening week at the box office. “Not much cash to grab it seems.”
It also likely did not help that The Crow still has to compete with theater space while two of the year’s most popular movies are still running. Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine both continue to break box office records
The Crow Vs. Borderlands
Many are already debating whether recent box office bomb Borderlands or The Crow reboot will wind up going down as the worst movie of the year. Proyas makes his vote clear when he shared a Rotten Tomatoes review calling The Crow the clear candidate.
“The review we’ve all been waiting for,” Proyas said after sharing a scathing review of The Crow reboot. “It’s a bit like flogging a dead horse now so I think I’ll stop after this…until another funny one comes along.”
Rare Honesty
It is not often that a creator is so openly judgmental of a new iteration of their work. It is a bit reminiscent of Stephen King infamously being very open in his dislike for Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of The Shining. However, while King eventually later conceded Kubrick’s version was well done, it is hard to imagine Proyas having such a turnaround on The Crow reboot.
The Original
Adding salt into the wound is that almost seeming in response to The Crow reboot’s failure, the original 1994 movie has been made available to stream for free. It almost feels like capitalizing on the reboot’s lack of success to remind people about the beloved original that they can watch instead. Judging by his other comments, Proyas would no doubt approve of this.
