New Anime Film Ranks 7th On Opening Weekend
Certain movies make a hit with fans immediately after entering theaters. Such seems to be the case with the new drama anime film called The Colors Within. Only running for one weekend, the movie managed to hit seventh place in the Japanese box office, despite going up against pretty strong contenders.
A Short Window
The Colors Within first opened in theaters on August 30. Between then and September 1, the movie managed to rank seventh in theaters. While seventh place isn’t necessarily the best, it’s the only one in the top 10 to be there for just a single weekend.
The Competition
Above The Colors Within is Kingdom: Return of the Great General, Despicable Me 4, My Hero Academia: You’re Next, Crayon Shin-chan The Movie: Our Dinosaurs, Inside Out 2, and Last Mile in first place.
Of those, Last Mile is the only one that has been there less than three weeks. The other five on the list have been in theaters for between four and eight weeks.
In addition to this impressive ranking, The Colors Within also scored third for Filmarks’ first-day satisfaction ranking. It earned an average score of 3.92 out of 5, with over 2,000 reviews to provide the score.
Critical Reception
Because it’s still so new, there are not enough reviews on My Anime List to provide an average score for The Colors Within, and the same is true of Rotten Tomatoes.
However, on IMDb, the movie does have an average score, which is 7.5 out of 10 as of the time of writing.
The Colors Within focuses on a girl named Totsuko (Sayu Suzukawa), who can see the colors people have in their hearts. One other student in particular, Kimi (Akari Takaishi), has the prettiest color Totsuko has ever seen.
To try and get closer, she forms a band with Kimi and a quiet boy named Rui (Taisei Kido). Together, they practice their music, forming a bond and discovering their true colors.
The Creators
The three voice actors for the main characters in The Colors Within are all new to anime. Though they’ve all been in a couple of dramas and live-action adaptations, this will be their debut voice acting roles for anime.
Science SARU (Dandadan) is the animation team behind The Colors Within, with Naoko Yamada (A Silent Voice) as the director. It’s an original story, with Reiko Yoshida (Blue Period) writing the screenplay and Kensuke Ushio (Chainsaw Man) in charge of the music.
Beyond Japan
Like A Silent Voice, the story seems to be focused a lot on the hardships of teenage years, though more sweet and nostalgic than dark and emotional. Based on the trailers and released images so far, there is even a sense of nostalgia in the color choices and design.
While there is no exact date on when The Colors Within will come to North America, it is known that it will be distributed by GKIDS in the region.
The film is looking to get a pretty big international release, in Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Europe, Germany, and Italy releases as well.
