The Boys Star Terrifies In Dark Horror Movie On Hulu

By Britta DeVore | Published

As if his role on Prime Video’s The Boys as the sadistic, morally corrupt superhero Homelander wasn’t enough to keep the public permanently afraid of Antony Starr, the actor’s turn in a horror movie should do the trick. Right now, audiences can head over to Hulu to check out Cobweb, a spooky flick about how deep, dark secrets can tear a family apart. Joining Starr is a killer cast that also includes Party Down and Masters of Sex’s Lizzy Caplan, as well as rising child actor Woody Norman (C’mon C’mon).

Cobweb

Marking his directorial debut with the feature-length production, Samuel Bodin is the visionary mind behind Cobweb, which first crept into cinemas last year. The story centers on a young boy named Peter (Woody Norman) who lives a sheltered life inside his family home with his parents, Mark (Antony Starr) and Carol (Lizzy Caplan). One night, he begins to hear faint sounds from the inside of his wall, which grow louder with the passing of every day.

A Story Of Family Trauma

Certain that his parents are hiding something from him, Peter asks his mom and dad about the bizarre noises, which they immediately brush off. But, as the movie’s events unfold, it seems more than likely that Peter’s parents are indeed hiding something from him. Sure, it’s a solid plot for a scary movie, with a few twists and turns thrown in for effect, but at its heart, Cobweb is a story about gaslighting and family trauma told through a very in-your-face metaphor.

Split Reaction Among Fans And Critics

On Rotten Tomatoes, Cobweb sits with a 59 percent critics’ approval rating, while audiences seemed to enjoy it a bit more with 71 percent. Given a release in late July, the movie arrived in cinemas just a few months too early for the spooky season and was easily overshadowed by last summer’s major contenders, Oppenheimer and Barbie. For the most part, critics remained split on the film, with many wishing there had been a much more satisfying answer at the end, while others were ok with where the creative team took the storyline.

A Different Role For Antony Starr

Despite its mixed reviews, there’s no arguing that Samuel Bodin snagged an absolutely stellar leading cast for his breakthrough into feature-length filmmaking. Aside from his ongoing role as the psychopathic Homelander on Prime Video’s The Boys, New Zealand native Antony Starr also made a name for himself in the Cinemax crime drama series Banshee. Last year, prior to the arrival of Cobweb, the actor also joined forces with helmer Guy Ritchie in his action-packed film The Covenant.

Now Streaming On Hulu

Lizzy Caplan has been cracking up audiences for decades now thanks to her early roles in memorable titles like Freaks and Geeks and Mean Girls. Since then, she’s nabbed an Emmy nod for her work on Showtime’s Masters of Sex and has also made notable appearances in films like The Interview, and Now You See Me 2. Lastly, Cobweb’s youngest star, Woody Norman, had already landed a BAFTA nomination for his work opposite Joaquin Phoenix in C’mon C’mon before the horror movie’s arrival.

You can now head over to Hulu to check out Antony Starr, Lizzy Caplan, and Woody Norman, who are in their scariest roles yet, as Cobweb is now streaming.
