The Boys Fans Dismayed After Spinoff Report
Amazon Prime Video will dive even deeper into the world of The Boys with a spinoff set in Mexico. However, it may be a while before the show hits screens. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, flagship series showrunner Eric Kripke said that although they’ve started working on The Boys: Mexico, the series has “a lot of hurdles” to cross before it can become a reality.
The Writer
“They are still making the deal with the writer for the pilot,” Kripke explained. “He has an amazing pitch, and we all giggle and think about how fun it would be. But there are a lot of hurdles for that show. He’s got to write an amazing pilot. He’s probably got to write an amazing Episode 2. I think he can and he will, but we’re a while away from truly starting to drop in the Easter eggs and the setups and stuff.”
Making Sure Everything Stands On Its Own
According to Kripke, the biggest challenge for The Boys: Mexico is ensuring that it works as a standalone series. This is the reason Gen V got the green light.
Set in a college, the spinoff follows Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair), a teenager who can manipulate and weaponize blood. She enrolls in Godolkin University, the top school for young superheroes, which harbors a dark secret that Marie and her friends uncover.
Although the events of Gen V directly influence The Boys’ upcoming fourth season, Kripke is very cautious about this connection.
“I really don’t want people to feel they have to watch one show to understand the other,” he continued about The Boys: Mexico. “I never want it to feel like homework or mandatory viewing. I think that’s hurt Marvel in some ways, and I don’t want to do that.
The Boys: Mexico
The Boys: Mexico was officially announced in late November 2023 following the success of the first live-action spinoff series, Gen V. The series is being developed by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who wrote the screenplay for the DC film Blue Beetle.
Mexican actors Diego Luna (Andor) and Gael Garcia Bernal (Cassandro) are set to executive produce the series.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, The Boys’ latest spinoff will be set in Mexico and intricately tied into the lore of the original series and Gen V.
Although the series will be shot on location in Mexico, the creative team behind the flagship show will remain involved in the entire process to ensure the same tone is maintained across all three properties.
Season 4
Meanwhile, fans look forward to The Boys Season 4, which premieres its first three episodes on June 13. The story sees a terminally ill Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) find out about a man-made virus that can kill superheroes. It is the same virus that was a big deal in Gen V. The timing couldn’t be better, as Homelander (Antony Starr) is still rallying his extremist followers to support supe supremacy.
The Boys
Developed by Eric Kripke for Amazon Prime Video, The Boys is based on the comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The show follows a group of vigilantes known as “The Boys” who set out to take down corrupt superheroes, known as “The Seven,” who abuse their superpowers.
The story is set in a universe where superheroes exist and are recognized as celebrities, are as influential as politicians, and become revered as gods.
The Boys stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit and Jensen Ackles.
Critics have praised the series for its dark humor, action sequences, character development, storyline, and performances, particularly from Urban, Starr, and Ackles. It has received high ratings, which led to the current and upcoming spinoffs Gen V and The Boys: Mexico, respectively.
