The Boys Crazy Sex Scene Required Special Equipment To Film
The Boys had one of the wildest sex scenes in recent memory. Here's how it got made.
This article is more than 2 years old
The Boys has gained a reputation for being one of the nuttiest (and most enjoyable) shows in the television landscape. It continued to reestablish that reputation with an insane sex scene between two of its superhero characters, Homelander (Antony Starr) and Stormfront (Aya Cash). However, because these two characters are practically godlike beings, the way they engage in sex is a little more Earth-shattering than the rest of us.
In an interview with Collider, Antony Starr discussed the logistics of how he and The Boys co-star Aya Cash had to film the unusual scene. Unlike normal romantic scenes, this one required a stunt team and body armor to pull off some of the wilder gags. One part of the sequence has Homelander and Stormfront hovering in mid-air as they engage in some rigorous lovemaking. This involved both Starr and Cash being rigged in harnesses and spinning in the air.
As they were filming the scene, a number of different things went wrong, and The Boys actors could not do anything but laugh. They even ended up having to get a new chandelier prop – yeah, a chandelier falls off the ceiling during the love scene between Homefront and Stormfront – because the take was ruined by Starr and Cash being unable to take such a ridiculous moment seriously.
Starr compared the sequence to choreographing a ballet sequence or a fight scene. Starr is no stranger to intimate scenes in the projects he has been a part of, but those moments often involve conversations with your acting partner about levels of comfort and what the tone of the scene should be. Instead, this sex scene in The Boys involved safety briefings, learning to properly utilize the harness gear, how the visual effect would be integrated into the scene. Nothing like your usual sex scene prep work!
It has also proven to be one of the most important story developments for this new season of The Boys. Homelander has always felt he was the most powerful being on the planet, and that has led him to a life of disturbing loneliness. With Stormfront proving that she can go toe-to-toe with his incredible strength and superpowers, Homelander now has a potential partner that could act as a true equal for him.
This memorable scene from The Boys might also be acting as an homage to a similar scene in Frank Miller’s landmark graphic novel, The Dark Knight Returns. In that book, Superman and Wonder Woman also engage in some superpowered coitus and actually shake the very foundations of the planet. While Homelander and Stormfront only go so far as to break apart a large room – including some sturdy marble walls – it definitely feels like a sly nod to one of the most controversial and boundary-pushing comic books of all time.
The Boys clearly is here to push the same kinds of boundaries and that sex scene is one that will be hard to forget. Considering there are still three episodes left in the second season, we are betting there are even more mind-blowing moments in store.
