The Boys Ending With Theatrical Movie?

The Boys is building toward its eventual endgame as it was confirmed next season would be the last. However, there’s always potential for the franchise to continue on elsewhere, namely on the big screen. Laz Alonso, who plays MM on The Boys, recently appeared on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast to say he’s been pitching the idea for the show to end with a movie to creator Eric Kripke for years.

The Boys Cast Wants To Go Out With A Bang

Alonso said, “Make the last episode of season five the cliffhanger and announce the film that we’ve been filming since the beginning of the series,” and his co-star Antony Starr, who plays Homelander, also threw his support behind Alonso on the podcast. While Alonso noted that Eric Kripke has brushed off the idea, he also suggested that if the fans could push for it, maybe the film could come to fruition after all. The Boys was originally proposed as a potential movie trilogy, so the show ending with a film might not be too far-fetched.

A Streaming Blockbuster

The Boys has been hugely popular and a massive success for Prime Video, so it’s possible that Amazon would consider a movie. However, there’s also the added cost and logistics behind it, plus the fact the movie wouldn’t be a standalone and instead would be a finale for the series. That means newcomers who would be interested in checking the film out in theaters would need to do quite a bit of homework first.

Amazon’s Aversion To Theaters

There’s also the fact that Prime Video seems like it’s not especially eager to put projects on the big screen, as evidenced by the big kerfuffle between Amazon and director Doug Liman over putting Road House in theaters instead of direct to streaming.

The Boys has already found plenty of success as a streaming property, so Amazon might view it as too big of a risk to try and bring a movie to theaters. Now, if the series wanted to finish things off with a movie-sized event episode as the finale, that would make sense, and it would allow people to still check it out at home on their small screens.

Enough Fans To Justify A Movie?

The Boys ending things with a movie is an exciting idea in theory, but the fact that creator Eric Kripke seems hesitant about the whole thing does make it seem even less likely. Adding to the risk factor is the fact that the film would absolutely need to be as Rated-R as the rest of the series, making it an even less appealing pitch to the studio execs at Amazon.

Of course, fans of the series would likely be buying tickets, but would that be enough to justify a big movie budget, marketing, and a theatrical release?

There’s Plenty Of The Boys To Binge

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see if The Boys ends up getting a movie or if its final destination will be the streaming home it’s had since Season 1. In the meantime, the fourth and penultimate season of the series is wrapping up with its season finale this Thursday. Make sure to check that out, and you can stream the rest of the series, along with the spin-offs Gen V and The Boys Presents: Diabolical, on Prime Video now.
