San-Diego Comic-Con is coming to an end today, but fans of Star Trek, Marvel, DC, and other major properties got plenty of news and teases to look forward to. Those who love the newest run of Star Trek shows will be especially pumped, as it was announced that the live-action Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks will be getting a crossover episode on Paramount+. Apparently, the episode will be a mix of live-action and animation, so it will be interesting to see how the episode turns out.
The crossover episode was announced at the Star Trek panel when stars of Star Trek: Lower Decks Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome made a surprise appearance, crashing the portion of the panel led by Strange New Worlds star Anson Mount. The episode will take place sometime during Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, when the characters Ensign Beckett Mariner (Newsome) and Ensign Brad Boimler (Quaid) join the U.S.S Enterprise. The episode will be directed by Jonathan Frakes, who fans will be very familiar with as Commander William Riker from The Next Generation.
Strange New Worlds follows the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, led by Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), in the years before Captain Kirk joined the Enterprise crew. In addition to Mount as Pike, the show features Rebecca Romijn as Number One and Ethan Peck as Science Officer Spock. Lower Decks, on the other hand, follows the support crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos, one of Starfleet’s least important ships. While Strange New Worlds is a much more traditional Star Trek Show, Lower Decks is an animated comedy. Mixing the tone of these two shows and the live-action and animation will certainly be intriguing.
According to executive producer Henry Alonso Meyers, the idea for the odd-sounding Star Trek crossover came from writer David Reed, who is known for penning episodes of The Boys, a show that Jack Quaid also stars on. While it seems like Newsome and Quaid will be the only ones crossing over for this episode, there’s always a chance the Enterprise and Cerritos could cross paths again in the future, if the crossover goes over well with fans.
If you want to catch up on these two Star Trek shows before they join forces, you can view them both on Paramount+. Star Trek: Lower Decks will be premiering its third season on August 25. In addition to Newsome and Quaid, the show stars Noel Wells, Eugene Cordero, Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O’Connell, Fred Tatasciore, Gillian Vigman, Paul Scheer, Jessica McKenna, Nolan North, Phil LaMarr, and more. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds finished up its first season in July, with a second season set to air in 2023. In addition to Mount, Romijn, and Peck, the series stars Melissa Navia, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Babs Olusanmokun, Andre Dae Kim, Bruce Horak, and more. At Comic-Con, a short teaser for the third and final season of Picard was also revealed at Comic-Con.
