The That ’70s Show spinoff That ’90s Show is full steam ahead, with the series currently filming and a first image already posted by members of the cast. However, the show will have to go on without one of the best characters, as Danny Masterson will not be returning for the reboot. Due to his current legal issues, we likely won’t ever be seeing Steven Hyde on the show.

Danny Masterson appeared as a main cast member for the entire run of That ’70s Show. As the cynical, cool-guy Steven Hyde, he quickly became a fan favorite. Hyde was a little more grounded and rational than some of the other characters from the group but had a biting wit that would lend itself to some hilarious moments at the expense of others. There was a lot of heart to the character too, as he became sort of an adoptive son to Red and Kitty Forman and a brother to Eric. This combination of humor and pathos made Hyde one of the most well-rounded characters in the cast.

Despite this fan-favoritism, Danny Masterson has already been cut off from working with Netflix before That ’90s Show even started as a concept. Materson had multiple rape allegations leveled against him before eventually being charged with multiple counts of rape. His impending criminal trial is set to be held in August of this year. He was also sued by several of his accusers in civil court. Needless to say, Netflix decided they did not wish to pursue a professional relationship with the actor anymore and cut ties with him when he was starring in their series The Ranch. The Ranch starred fellow That ’70s Show alum, Ashton Kutcher. Masterson played his brother Rooster and his character was subsequently killed off after he was fired from the series.

Though fans of the show may be dismayed that Danny Masterson’s character won’t be on the new Netflix series, they can at least celebrate the fact that every other main cast member of That ’70s Show will be making an appearance. Topher Grace, Mila Kunis, Wilmer Valderrama, Laura Prepon, and Ashton Kutcher will all be coming back to Point Place, Wisconsin. However, the main focus will likely be on the new cast of characters that includes Eric and Donna’s daughter, Leia Forman. The series will see Leia visiting her grandparents, Red and Kitty, for the summer. During her visit, she’ll meet some other teen residents of Point Place.

So, even if Danny Masterson isn’t returning, it doesn’t appear he would have the biggest role anyway. Kurtwood Smith (Red) and Debra Jo Rupp (Kitty) appear to be the original cast members we’ll see the most of. The two actors also serve as executive producers for the new show. Meanwhile, the new cast will include Callie Haverda as Leia, along with Mace Coronel, Ashley Aufderheide, Reyn Doi, Maxwell Acee Donovan, and Samantha Morelos. There is no current release date yet for That ’90 Show, but you’ll be able to stream it on Netflix when it is eventually released.
