Terminator Netflix Series Happening, Here’s What We Know
Variety reported that fans of the Terminator franchise will soon have the privilege of watching Terminator as an animated series on Netflix, as the newly created show was teased as a part of the Geeked Week promotional cycle.
Terminator: The Anime Series
The new show was announced under a working title, Terminator: The Anime Series, and will be produced by the same Japanese animation studio responsible for the popular anime series Ghost in the Shell, Production IG.
The Netflix teaser for the new animated Terminator series on Netflix begins with a stark warning, “On August 30, 1997, everything changes”.
August 30th, 1997
Coming from the announcement, and on Twitter, there are some specifics about the date here. Fans of the popular franchise already know what happened on August 30, 1997, but for those who don’t know, the date marks the uprising of an AI network known as Skynet.
On that day, Skynet became self-aware and began an all-out war against humanity.
Original Terminator
The first Terminator movie (dropped long before the creation of Netflix) in 1984 told the story of a cyborg (Arnold Schwarzenegger) who was sent back in time with the main mission to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton).
Connor was soon going to be giving birth to a boy who will grow into a man who will ultimately save the human race from the rise of the machines.
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
In the second movie, Terminator 2: Judgement Day (also released long before Netflix was around), Sarah Connor and her son John (Edward Furlong) are once again stalked by a Skynet machine sent back in time looking to kill the boy before he is able to grow into the man who saves the world.
The resistance also sends a reprogrammed AI of their own who is charged with protecting Sarah and John from the murderous Skynet thug on the hunt.
Terminator Franchise
While the first two movies in the franchise are often thought of as the foundation of the Terminator franchise, there were several more movies produced over the years.
All in all, the franchise consists of six films, a television series, novels, comics, and video games, but the newest Terminator from Netflix marks the first animated project
Most of the movies released after Judgement Day were met with bad reviews and torn apart by critics until Terminator: Dark Fate was released in 2019.
Linda Hamilton returned as the main character in the 2019 film, granting the movie a little more favor with audiences, but it was still considered a box office flop.
Terminator: The Anime Series Plot
Now Matt Tomlin is the showrunner, executive producer, and writer for the new Terminator: The Anime Series via Netflix. Skydance is also notated as an executive producer of the show and Masashi Kudo (Bleach) is set to direct.
