Avengers: Endgame Thanos Captain America

In what is a baffling misunderstanding of what both Avengers: Endgame and Watchmen are about, Ted Cruz has stated that both pieces of entertainment prove that liberals believe that people are a disease.

On his The Verdict podcast, Ted Cruz said, “Have you ever noticed in many movies how often rabid environmentalists are the bad guys? Whether it’s Thanos, or got to Watchmen…the view of the left is people are a disease.” Cruz continued, “They buy into the Malthusian line that there are too many people in the world, people are bad and everything would be better if we had fewer people. Thanos wanted to eliminate 50 perfect of the life forms in the universe with one finger snapping.” Clearly, I also missed the part of Avengers: Endgame where Thanos voted for Joe Biden.

Maybe even weirder than his misinterpretation of Avengers: Endgame is that Ted Cruz clearly doesn’t have any idea what Watchmen was about. Cruz has strangely said in the past that Rorschach was one of his favorite superheroes – which seems to completely miss the point. But also, neither the book, film, or the HBO series had anything to do with environmentalism. But according to Cruz, apparently, the antagonists within Watchmen are environmentalist liberals?

Rightfully, the internet has pounced on Ted Cruz’s confused take on both Avengers: Endgame and Watchmen. Lola Byock, a writer and producer on HBO’s Watchmen said she had no idea what Cruz was talking about. Even Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director James Gunn stated that Cruz’s ideas make no sense.

In the past, Ted Cruz has stated that Hollywood is run by liberals, yet what his recent rant supposes is that Hollywood made a superhero film, but then decided to make the villain of Avengers: Endgame…a liberal? That doesn’t even begin to get into his thoughts on HBO’s Watchmen, in which Rorschach – again, one of Ted Cruz’s favorite superheroes – wrongfully inspired an entire group of white nationalists into committing acts of terror, only for them to be unmasked as potential politicians. A LOT to unpack there.

Ted Cruz seems to be railing against President Biden’s plans to halt the Keystone XL project, but using Avengers: Endgame and Watchmen as examples to prove his point seems to have only caused the internet to rail against his confused misreading of two beloved pieces of entertainment. It almost makes one wonder what Cruz’s thoughts are on other famous villains of entertainment. Was Darth Vader creating the Death Star to destroy Mexico’s border wall? Was Hans Gruber fighting for economic equality? Did Cruz watch JFK and wonder why Oliver Stone wasn’t showing his father hanging out with Lee Harvey Oswald? Who knows what’s going on in that head.

Thankfully, the internet seems to agree that Ted Cruz’s thoughts on Avengers: Endgame and Watchmen are incomprehensible and completely misguided. It’s extremely weird to watch Avengers: Endgame and think its purple villain is representative of liberal environmentalists, or that Watchmen in any of its forms has literally anything to do with environmentalists in any way. Giant mind-controlling squids and blue men living on Mars, yes. Conservationism? Not really. All Ted Cruz has proven in this spiel is that maybe he shouldn’t try and explain superhero entertainment when he doesn’t seem to have any idea what they’re about.
