Taron Egerton has already made quite the name for himself in the world of comic book film adaptations thanks to his involvement in Kingsman: The Secret Service and its sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Now, it looks like he will be adding his talents to Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s landmark comic book series The Sandman. Deadline confirmed that the actor is attached to the project, but a new report says that he is going to pay one of the most beloved characters in the entire DC comic book canon.
Small Screen is claiming that their source has told them Taron Egerton will be portraying John Constantine, the lackadaisical sorcerer that has been portrayed by Keanu Reeves in the underrated 2005 film and by Matt Ryan in a single season television show as well as appearances in The CW’s Arrowverse shows. the character has maintained a strong fanbase and fans have been wondering if a newiteration of the character was on the horizon.
This is definitely a big development. If Taron Egerton is slated to play John Constantine in The Sandman, does this mean that news about Keanu Reeves returning to the character could mean that follow-up is falling through? Or is this all part of Warner Bros.’ plan to have the DC stable of projects embrace their multiverse structure? Is it possible that we could see multiple versions of John Constantine across a number of projects and that they could eventually meet up? If that is the case, it sounds like quite the wild ride.
Taron Egerton is certainly keeping busy of late. In addition to his involvement in The Sandman, he is also attached to a movie that centers around the creation and success of Tetris. Not to mention a series order for In With the Devil, a six-part adaptation of a true crime memoir for Apple TV+. He has also been rumored to play the lead role of Seymour Krelborn in a new film version of the musical Little Shop of Horrors. Suffice to say, you will not be left wanting for any Taron Egerton in the next few years.
The Sandman is one of the most highly anticipated adaptations of a DC Comics property since it is considered one of the most revolutionary comic book stories of all time. Exactly how prominent Taron Egerton will be as John Constantine in The Sandman remains to be seen – in the comics, the character would appear for a few arcs – but it is likely he will have a strong presence considering his level of star power right now.
This is all exciting news for Taron Egerton fans and comic book fans. It will be very intriguing to see what kind of unique spin the actor brings to the iconic character of John Constantine.
