Star Wars just released the first trailer for its upcoming Tales of the Empire animated series, scheduled to release on May 4—Star Wars Day. The newly released trailer features some of the series’ best villains, including Grand Admiral Thrawn, Morgan Elsbeth, Barriss Offee, and many others.

The previously released Tales of the Jedi brought us the never-before-seen moments in the lives of Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku—while the latter was still a Jedi. The series was a massive success among the fans, and both Lucasfilm and Disney now seek to repeat its success with the upcoming Tales of the Empire, which follows the same format but focuses more on the dark side of the Force, and the sinister origins and the dawn of the Galactic Empire—specifically focusing on Morgan Elsbeth and Barriss Offee.

The entire first season of Tales of the Empire will be available to stream on Disney+ on Saturday, May 4.

As stated at the beginning, Tales of the Empire is scheduled to drop on May 4, but with the distinction of releasing the whole season at once, instead of the weekly release format followed by Tales of the Jedi. The new anthology was also created and written by Dave Filoni, and it follows two warriors on divergent paths in different eras. One of them is Morgan Elsbeth, who channels her loss into anger, which provides the Imperial forces with something to exploit.

The other character driving the narrative of the upcoming Tales of the Empire is the former Jedi Barriss Offee, who’s forced to do whatever it takes to survive in the ever-changing galaxy. Her addition to the narrative is particularly exciting for the fans, as it might offer some resolution to a major hanging plot thread from The Clone Wars. The fans have long theorized that Offee would become a prime candidate for the position of an Imperial Inquisitor following her arrest, and she’s among the top theorized characters behind the mysterious mask of Inquisitor Marrok.

Meredith Salenger, who originally voiced Barriss Offee in The Clone Wars, returns to the part for Tales of the Empire.

Seeing Morgan Elsbeth survive General Greivous’s massacre of the Nightsisters in Tales of the Empire and her subsequent alliance with Admiral Thrawn is quite exciting. Especially now that Thrawn has returned to Dathomir—the Nightsisters’ homeworld—at the end of Ahsoka. It would be interesting to see if the tales connect and what Thrawn’s return to Dathomir might reveal about the future of the entire Star Wars franchise.

Diana Lee Inosanto originated the part of Morgan Elsbeth in The Mandalorian, reprised the role in Ahsoka, and will voice the Nightsister in Tales of the Empire.

As per the trailer, we’ll also see the Grand Inquisitor, General Grievous, and, of course, Darth Vader. So, whatever the case may be, Tales of the Empire is surely to become a welcomed addition to the franchise, especially since it poses as a twin release to Tales of the Jedi. Disney is really winning the fandom’s hearts with these animated releases from its subsidiaries, Lucasfilm and Marvel—the latter has been particularly successful with its X-Men ’97 release.
